How long left in this Mayo team?

They'll do well to replace those older players with like for like quality, I just don't see it happening."
There ain't much left when their best forward is a 35 yr old.
Their captain will kick you 6 points more when your 6 points in front but proved this past 2 years that he can't kick 1 when it's needed.
Serious lack of belief in the team and even when they went 2 up with 6 mins to go there seemed a lack of belief in their supporters that they could do this.
That's understandable I suppose with all the near misses they have had.
Bottom line is that team along with Tyrone are finished.
It's Dublins to rule for the foreseeable future as there is nothing in the pipeline in any county to challange them.
I'd expect them to create a record of 5 maybe 6 or even more in a row.

Just look at Dublin and the likes of Kerry over the years. Dublin are in constant transition so this in my opinion doesn't need to be an argument. Alex Ferguson was another master of it. One whole team doesn't retire at the same time. Good management teams ensure he changes 1 or 2 players every year.

The 2013 minor team and 2016 under 21 team does not have any player of the quality of the existing Mayo team, which is backboned by the successful 2006 under 21 team. Apart from Diarmuid o Connor and possibly Conor Loftus, I don't see anyone from these underage teams good enough to make the required level. Stephen Coen has been there for last two years but I dont think he has what it takes to make it at senior grade. However I would say that the FBD league and possible the national league should be used as a platform to introduce these lads to senior intercounty football. We need to see Shane Nally, Adam Gallagher, Matthew Ruane, Saroize Akram, Caolan Crowe, Eoin O Donoghue, Brian Reape, Fergal Boland (who had a good start to 2017 but faded), Michael Plunkett, Michael Hall getting more time in 2018. If 3 of these players made it through in 2018 then it may give us a platform for a few more years.

positivity as always is your strong point.

Hopefully a long time yet, pleasure to have them in the championship and a very worthy rival and what battles. Despite the popular narrative i think this era will go down as one of high quality for the teams in there Zenith, Mayo are certainly a huge part of that.

I don't believe the standard of football being played is that high. Dublin are playing a high standard football but for whatever reason they have fallen over the line in All Ireland finals you have to go back to 1977 since they won a final by more than one score. The current era has so many great counties that are in their worst state for decades eg Meath Down Derry Armagh Laois Cork and til recently Kildare and Galway.

You're right in a way but alot of times in amateur sport or GAA you may have to persist with the same lads past their peak as they are still better than any replacement. Fergie replenished his squad but ultimately left a UTD squad in ruins when he left. Remember he took Scholes out of retirement. You can't compare managers in professional sport to managers in GAA where you selection is limited by geography and population.

Thats a myth, Fergie left behind a EPL winning squad that won the league in April. They brought in David Moyes who was clearly out of his depth for a club as big as Man United and left them in 7th place. Van Gaal then was a poor appointment as he as he past his best for about a decade. They are now rebuilding with in a like for like manager with a ego as big as Fergie.

Ferguson built a squad, Mourinho is buying one. He's buying well in fairness. Don't know what Chelsea were thinking selling Matic but he could be the signing that wins the league for United.

I think they will regroup and motivate themselves for one more throw of the dice next year and will be equally competitive.

What happens after that will be interesting. It takes a 3-4 year S&C program to get players up to the right level and I am not sure if there are 12 -15 lads we never heard of going through the process to get to the right level to start fitting in as replacements.

I would also be interested in comment from Mayo contributors on the cumulative effect of the club championship being screwed up for the last 6 years. Mayo have a very good set up for Senior County football and a lot of know how on how to maintain an elite level. Is the raw material there to replenish the forces ?

Now that is funny about COC and has a ring of truth about it, big moments is what seperates the winners from the losers, the way Connolly hopped the ball to Rock before that final free,Dublin are so full of confidence and proven winners even when not playing well, I have no doubt this would have been 5 in a row but for Donegal beating them in the 2014 semi final,
I think Mayo have shot there bolt, they will always be remembered as the team of nearly men.

He's also had thd best season of his career. He's fitter than he's ever been. Andy has said he's reaping the benefits from a career change. He used to do a lot of driving as a rep. Now he has his own gym in Castlebar, keeping fit is his job. Time will inevitably catch up with him fairly soon but he'll definitely play next year.

Thats very harsh on OConnor. Remember he got the score to draw the final last year. His free was a lot more difficult than Rock's. Added to that he was kicking into a booing Hill 16, (Dublin only, honestly where else in world sport do a team own a stand and play all games at home? Crazy)

Kerry will eventually challenge, although the standard of coaching and tactical awareness in Kerry is lightyears behind the Dublin structure. Dublin will stroll to a 5 in a row.

Mayo are still going to be the main challengers to Dublin next year. Maybe Kerry can get their act together as they have the players but the rest are nowhere near challenging.

I'd agree with that, Dublin Kerry Mayo, then there's a group of 5 or 6 around the one standard, the rest are totally lost, Dublin are far ahead of everyone though, they struggled against Mayo but it was their first tough game, I doubt they would have had the same problems with Roscommon or Cork like Mayo had, I think Kerry though could be the first to stop them, maybe even next year if they get their ducks in a row.
Must be so frustrating being a Mayo fan, so near so many times.
