The curse is a load of nonsense. They were playing one of the greatest football teams and lost by a point. Stupid thread fireinthebelly (Galway) - Posts: 89 - 17/09/2017 18:15:15 2046840 Link 6 |
I think youre being very kind to Vaughan, O Connor and McQuillan with your theory

In fairness it's not just those three incidents. Look at last years final. Not one but two own goals. Was there an own goal in any league or championship game this year? Coyles bouncing point in 1996 to equalise for meath. Today the just couldn't get the rub of the green. As Al Pacino said it's a game of inches, Mayo just do not get that inch they need. An inch to the left and O'Connor has scored the winning point in an all ireland final, if Joe was a few inches closer would he have given the penalty rather than a free? 11 finals in my lifetime and not one win. It's hard not to think that there isn't a curse somewhere.

The only curse is one of poor shooting at times. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 17/09/2017 20:37:14 2046975 Link 2 |
How has it? The last 2 All Irelands involving Mayo and the cruel way they lost would make you think that maybe there's something in this.

There was a documentary done a couple of years ago called "Mallacht Mhaigh Eo" in which they interviewed several of the surviving players from the 1951 All-Ireland winning side. It's up on YouTube if you want to see it. Anyway, none of the players could remember any such incident. Moreover, there were no funerals in Foxford, where the incident supposedly took place, that week. Look, I'm as upset as any Mayo man not to have won it today. But there are several prosaic explanations for our loss without resorting to the supernatural, such as: -Losing our fullback to a crazy sending-off; -Missing a sitter of a goal chance to put us four up; -Cillian missing two relatively simple frees by his standards; -Some simple chances missed in the first half when Mayo were on top; -Last but not least, Dublin being a superb team with a formidable bench. The only way to get over the line is to examine why you failed and come back better. My only fear is that my grandfather, who was an infant when Mayo last hoisted Sam, and who has been in ill health in recent years, will go to his reward without seeing it. That's just life; it never has and never will be fair, and there are far greater injustices in this world than losing a few football matches. I dont know how Mayo could have played any better today. They did their very best. I think what lost them the game was the Dublin bench. Every time they went up the pitch, they looked lively in the 2nd half while Mayo was labouring to create chances a lot of the time, especially in the final 10 minutes. Hard to credit that anyone could believe in this nonsense in 2017. Every underachieving county has had a "curse" associated with it. Clare had the Biddy Early one, Kildare allegedly have one. I grew up being told about the one that was on the Galway hurlers. Thankfully that was shattered in 1980. Mayo did not play well enough in any of the finals they have lost. Ironically had they played as well in the final against Donegal some years ago as they did today they'd have won that particular final and this nonsense of the curse would be history

Laois have one that they'll never win a senior all ireland with the name of Delaney on the team. All similar theme.. Members of that family left mass early for a match and were cursed by a priest. This was when Laois won 3 Leinsters in a row in the 1930s and were all ireland contenders.

Nothing harsh about the red. The ref got that right. Totally stupid reaction I'm afraid to an incident was being dealt with.

Biddy Earley cursed Clare for 81 years. She said if Clare wernt good enough to win then they wouldnt win. Then when they were good enough... guess what. ZUL10 (Clare) - Posts: 693 - 18/09/2017 23:14:18 2047815 Link 1 |
I don't believe in any such nonesence, neither do I believe that the bench won it for Dublin. Mayo were the better team, as they were in the first game last year, but they were no clinical enough. Even when O'Connor's late free came down off the upright the Mayo players were slow to react - Drake was in a great position to take advantage of it but hadn't anticipated that a rebound might happen.

I don't agree. An inch to either side and they could have lost games to Cork, Derry, Rosccommon or Kerry. Mayo did brilliant to get to the final where although not far off they were beaten by the best team in Ireland. Its a panel game where Dublin were bringing on superstars like Connolly who was perfect when the game was in the melting pot. dstuction (Donegal) - Posts: 1209 - 19/09/2017 08:24:35 2047889 Link 2 |
If mayo had played football anything near the level of this year and last especially sunday just gone in final against Donegal they would have won handy OhtobeARossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 1764 - 19/09/2017 08:50:23 2047893 Link 0 |
