Oar.T.E. do go over the top with their coverage of these type of events.I seem to remember the Country lost the run of itself a couple of years ago when we beat England in a Cricket match.

My point is RTE love rugby so they give it more coverage and they go easy on the rugby teams when they underachieve.

That was some achievement in fairness.

There were tons of analogies floating around to quantify the magnitude of the result, such as: it would be like if Leitrim beat Kilkenny at Hurling or England beat Ireland at Hurling etc.

After lots of really good analogies to describe it someone came up with the best one of the lot: " it would like if Ireland beat England at cricket".

I asked you what did that Holland and Portugal team achieve before the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. Answer : nothing.

The Netherlands, not Holland which is a region within it, finished runners-up in both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. They played a style of football called Total Football,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Football

they were both brilliant and revolutionary.

Besides being considered the best team in both tournaments, they lost both finals, in 1974 to a very good West German side; and in 1978 to Argentina, although this was tainted by accusations of corruption.

My favourite player of all time, and one of the greatest, is Johan Cruyff. he played in 1974, but not in 1978 for political reasons.

For you to say that Holland [sic] achieved nothing before 2002, is, to be blunt, ignorant.

'I asked you what did that Holland and Portugal team achieve before the 2002 World Cup qualifiers' Just that Netherlands team. The team in our qualifying group in 2002. Previous to those qualifiers that group of players won nothing. If playing fantastic football is an achievement by all means they did achieve.

I watched the '74 World Cup as a 5 year old, too young to appreciate them but the 78 World Cup there were two men. Cruyff and Kempes. The world forgot Kempes but Cruyff changed football. He was also an extremely stubborn man. I think if we are overachievers The Dutch must rank close to the top of the underachievers. They reach a tournament and often there's a row that affects their focus. They played sweet football but a touch of pragmatism added might have won some trophies. Too much pragmatism in 2010, hacking opponents enroute to the final. Bergkamp my favourite Premier League player. Magic. As I said earlier their '88 team was class.

And a country like Greece, blanket defences itself to a European Championship. If we overachieve we should reach higher and keep overachieving. We've achieved great results, we may not have superstar players like other countries, but we needn't fear them. A good team can beat a team of some great individuals if they put their mind to it. Just my opinion.

I haven't looked at this thread in a few days. What did i start!

From the Irish ladies rugby team to Total Football!! Both are as far removed from one another after watching the Irish ladies perform similarly to the men in the 2007 WC.

Now the French women's rugby team could throw around the ball with panache.

Back to the ladies RWC. At least in the GAA we don't have pointless 7th or 8th position matches once knocked out of a tournament and then losing a 5th/6th place play off. How in God's name do the ladies motivate themselves for the game for 7th place.

If your not in it to win every game you play then you shouldn't be playing sports. Whether it's a final or a challenge game you should want nothing less than a win.

Very easy to for number of reasons. A win ends tournament on a high. Win means automatic qualification for next world cup.

Yes i only found out the later part of your statement late last night about World Cup seeding.

Hardly going out on a high in 7th position when your aim was a semi spot. If we were talking about children in a juvenile blitz fair enough.

For me it would be the equivalent of Ireland men's rugby team beating the US Eagles for 9th position after falling to make the quarters in 2007. Wouldn't exactly call that going out on a high.

Well had they done so they would have beaten the reigning olympic champions!!!

Usa have had some great players in the past dan lyle ,tardits (ex nfl too) todd clever, luke gross chris wyles, dave hodges taku ngwenya, swords, vizard. Now coached by ex all black player and coach and former garryowen player john mitchell ,

all jokes aside im not a fan of these ranking matches -after losing a semi final - do you really play for third place

3rd and 4th place playoffs in football World Cup are games neither teams have much interest in. Tend to be good open games though.

I understand Janesboro that the US had/have some great individuals but as a team we'd always expect to beat them. Ngwenya skinned Habana in that World Cup. Though in 2007 after the Georgia game who knows! Remember Denis Leamy preventing a Georgian from scoring the winning try!

Terrible decline in performance since the spring. Ireland need to blood younger players, quite an old squad.

A win/good performance would have ended tournament that was disappointing on a high compared to another loss etc..
Comparing to juveniles is silly and you can't compare to men's game as they don't use these sort of playoffs

It was a wake up call for Ireland ladies rugby. Two real teams contesting the final now.

If we won today it would be better than a loss but we've dropped down the pecking order and have an ageing squad. Lindsay Peat 36, Maz Reilly 37, Alison Millar, who i run with, 33 in November. Niamh Briggs 31/32.
The Grand Slam in 2013 and championship in 2015 were great achievements but we need to build again.
