Replying To alano12:  "eh holland and portugal were both exceptional in euro 2000, the dutch had also reached the 98 semis, ..portugal had the best player in the world or one of at the time along with a lot of other quality players..they were considered porutgals golden generation of players...the dutch also had lots of top players, portugal reached the 2004 final after,..you really are going to extreme lengths to belittle the achievements of our soccer team, do you realise what over achieving is?...sometimes you just have to accept you have no leg to stand on when it comes to this point...what do you actually realistically expect us to be doing in soccer because its laughable what you are asking, we relied on getting a late penalty against spain to even get to penalties so to claim we should have beaten them is quite a reach...and as for greece, they proved themselves to be a consistently well drilled side qualifying for numerous tournaments and always being competitive..its only recently that theyve fallen off completely"
The exceptional Dutch and Portuguese teams reached semi finals in Euros while the well-organised Greeks, who nobody gave a chance in hell won the Euros. Nothing to do with a triumph of teamwork, tactics and self-belief over teams with talented individuals. I asked you what did that Holland and Portugal team achieve before the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. Answer : nothing. The Dutch are prone to shoot themselves in the foot in tournaments. Var 1988, absolutely magic team. Finally last year Portugal delivered on their promise. Wasn't a skill laden team. Was a team with good tactics and self belief.

Getting back to the Women's Rugby World Cup, why it get such extraordinary coverage from RTE? LIve coverage plus lengthy panel discussions. As far as I can see public interest was low and the crowds small.

i already answered your question..they reached the euros in 2000 losing in extra time and on penalties to very good french and italian sides respectively..the dutch side in 2004 was significantly younger but you of course ignore that because you clearly dont know your stuff a whole lot..that side contained a young robben, sneijder, van der vaart etc while portugal had the likes of ronaldo coming through...you havent been able to counter any point iv made..and stuck with the same simplistic arguments which completely ignore any context...what do you expect ireland to be doing?

losing on penalties to a class italian side is shooting yourself in the foot alright...keep it up with those easy lazy stereotypes where you can get away without actually discussing what happened...this wasnt euro 96 so stop trying to pretend like it was

was a team with some top players in key positions such as pepe, and ronaldo or have you ever heard of him?...much superior to anything we have

Absolutely. Pepe was class. The whole defence and defensive setup of the team was very effective. Dropping Carvahlo was a great move. Renato Sanches brilliant. Not a brilliant tournament from Ronaldo in an attacking sense, what we're used to, but captained them well. Portugal finally delivered with a less illustrious side, bar Ronaldo, than most of their previous teams.

you could say the same about camogie at weekend - shown on rte very little interest poor crowd -good analysis
two good games so im glad they showed it would have gone myself but was in thurles for the 21s

on the soccer theme euro 88 was th eone that got away a miskick by koeman get to a mile offside kieftwhohead it wide but a most vicious spin gets it in -outplayed ussr in the tournament and they were two good sides

you said the dutch were prone to shooting themselves in the foot, they had a big fall out in 96, there were no issues in 98 or 2000 so stop with the lazy stereotypes

Because he's a D4 sport and RTE are a D4 broadcaster which means they are exempt from criticism when they under perform too.

Our own side was quality too. Bonner,Hughton Moran, McCarthy, Houghton, McGrath, Whelan, Galvin Aldridge, Stapleton. Serious players, most of them playing with top clubs at the time. Moran is some man and was a great sportsman. Married to a Westport woman. Headed over to one of the biggest clubs in the world with a B. Comm in one pocket and 2 Celtic crosses in the other.
