Carlow Senior Football Championship 2017

Wishing Eire Og and the club success on Sunday in Longford. I hope the celebrating has taken a back seat over the past few days and the players are ready for Sunday. A big ask for a relatively inexperienced side to win but the YI'S are capable of getting a foothold in Leinster.

Eire Og is not an inexperienced side... at least half of them have played inter-county football... they had a panel of 40 players for the county final... so they are a mega club like the Dublin ones or Portlaoise.... if they lose tomorrow, it will be shameful... their resources are huge compared to their opponents... stop making excuses for them, they know what needs to be done. And I assume they will do it.

Great to hear you getting behind Eire Og Carps.

Very disappointing... Given Eire Og's huge resources (36 players listed on the programme today), I fully expected them to mount a big Leinster challenge... instead, they were atrocious... they let Carlow down today, especially after how Palatine represented the county with pride for the past 2 years... dreadful stuff...

Agree Carps - very poor display. Not focused on the game (maybe too much celebrating during the week-can't be done at this level) and let Mullinaghta dictate play for the first 30 mins. Improvement in 2nd half but certainly played with little conviction - more in hope than with belief.
Would imagine they will go for a new management team for 2018. Certainly Murphy not getting the best out of this group of players.

Hope Eire Og throw their weight behind the County again for 2018. I believe Carlow management were there today..... not sure if they saw anything to impress them though.

Not overly surprising considering how bad both county finals were. I think palatine must have took the foot off the pedal a bit this year, as on their day they would be far better than Eire og or rathvilly

I think Pal will be back stronger next year....just had one off-day.
Eire og very lucky to even draw with Rathvilly in the final the first day.

I used to enjoy watching Eire Og, Rathvilly Pal etc but the standards have fallen drastically - and the way the game has gone it's just impossible to watch.

I really can't see myself going to any SFC games within the county next year.

Why have the standards fallen? What are we doing wrong?. Is the championship structure not working or are there still to many teams playing senior, would a 6 team championship where they all play each other once then semi and final be better. Would a return to the old leagues where you could actually gain promotion help?. Is it good enough to win one game in a season and stay senior, that's what would have happened if o'hanrahans had managed to beat MLR. something will have to change. While it was nice to have a more positive year at inter county level it shouldn't mask over the challenges that remain, correct me if I'm wrong but I think 2008 was the last time we won a game in the Leinster club championships or possibly even before that and in recent years haven't even been competitive really.

Pal was fairly competitive. I think standards have fallen everywhere and a lot it to do with the tactical approach.... another issue is that there has been a levelling of standards in Carlow (which is good for the county team0... in the 90's, there were basically one and a half teams in Carlow... Eire Og (who barely trained before August) and Rathvilly... so if you took Eire Og out of the equation, no Carlow team would have a game at all in the Leinster in the 90's (anyone remembers what Erin's Isle did to Old Leighlin in 1997?!?)... Then O'Hanrahan's came up and we briefly had two a half... then as the Blues went into decline it levelled off at 5-6 teams who were all much of a muchness.... as it stands, next year anyone of Eire Og, Rathvilly, Palatine, Tinryland, Old Leighlin and MLR could win the championship, if they applied themselves.... and the Blues could if they got their act together (I know they are in IFC next year)... that's a very open championship and very few counties can say that... and that's the reality... don't forget Carlow Town has five clubs, four of them big (Pal, EO, Blues, Graigue, Asca)... Portlaoise only has one club... now if you put the pick of those five together, you'd win a lot of Leinsters.... I am happy to see this levelling of standards because the county team suffered when one or two clubs dominated... although I do think Eire Og are underachieving given their resources, and the Blues are a disgrace right now (such a terrible waste of talent)... anyway, the 8 team system is great, it's also made the junior and intermediate interesting... I can see Fenagh and St Andrews coming up over the next few years to make things even tighter at the top..

I'd also like to point out that when Meath was winning Leinsters and All-Ireland's, their clubs didn't nothing in the club championship... A competitive club scene is good for county teams... we all remember how Carlow wasn't much of a priority for many Eire Og and O'Hanrahan's players back in the day...

Well carps, delighted to see your confidence in my own auld club fenagh. V hard to predict adult success off 2/3 good years u16/minor. Why the bigger clubs will always be successful is volume - we d have had lean years where numbers were v tight. You ll loose lads along the way too and that's the reality of the gaa. Some of the team that lost to ballon were part of our first u14a finalists, and were neck and neck with Eire og all the way up to 21- the beat us in that final too - Sean Gannon's age group if If my memory is correct. Just 4/5 involved with junior A team now. So who knows. I think blending in 3/4 young lads every year is key. Look at MLR and the age spread - nearly 20 years between lads on it. But our club is going well at underage and its down to v good coaches and volunteers - as are in lots of clubs, and it is great for us to be dining at the top table of the underage scene and having Sean Murphy set such an example for them this year too was an inspiration for them too.
