Creedon Quits Laois Job

(Oldest Posts First)

What do ye think lads?
Pretty bad feeling around football in Laosi at moment and results were fairly awful this year. Can hardly all be the managements fault though.
Serious rethink needed in Laois across both codes. Still not a single senior football kicked in Laois championship this year so lots of games for new boss to see.

Why is it always manager fault? Justin McNulty, Tommy O'Flaharta, Micky Lillis and now Creedom gone. Laois players to have a good look at themselves

The ex Louth manager Colin Kelly is rumoured to be linked to the Laois job here in the Wee County.

Must be somewhat difficult to put your name forward for that job, be slated by Colm Parkinson on twitter and then have him shaking his head all year, when even Mick O'Dwyer wasn't a big enough name for him?

Creedon wasn't great with Tipp either. I never understood why he moved Sweeney out to centre forward the year after he top scored in the national league as a corner forward.

i honestly dont quite understand the sympathy managers get from people on here compared to players when you look at how much some of them are getting paid

100% correct again! Has become very popular nationally with people who know little about him.

As regards a new manager i'd like to see Chris Conway get the role. 39 yrs old, passionate Laois man, trained Knockbeg secondary school to National success. Won't take any messing.

A poster asked about our recent underage record. Very poor since 2007. Lost that U21 final by a point to Cork and were Leinster minor Champions that year. Those U21s consisted of minors who won an All-Ireland in 2003 and a Leinster in 2004 and 2005. Basically a group of about 7 or 8 present first team players will be 32/33 next year from those teams. The minors of 2007 like Donie Kingston and John O'Loughlin will be 28/29 next year. A few talented players between 21 and 27 like Steven Attride, Evan O'Carroll. Ross Munnelly is still on the panel and will be 35 next year. A new manager may need a big clear out. The talent isn't there compared to 10-15 years ago when we were picking from a lot of underage success from 1994-2007. However, we should still be able to do better than div 4 status with the players in the county.

No provincial win since 2007 underage.

Here's our underage success, 1994-2007.

Leinster U21: 1994, 1998, 2006, 2007
All Ireland U21 finalists: 1998, 2007

Leinster Minor: 1996, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007.
Al Ireland Minor Champs: 1996, 1997, 2003.

In counties like Laois when you get a golden age you have to make it count. We didn't make the most of it. It was a once in a life time generation for a small county. We had as much success underage as Galway, Kerry and Tyrone between 1994 and 1997. Result Galway 2 all-irelands in 1998 and 2001. Tyrone 3, 2003, 2005 and 2008. Kerry won 6 all-irelands 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009. Most of the all-irelands won by Kerry, Galway and Tyrone were won by teams backboned by players Laois beat underage. I'll give just one example as i'll be here all night. Galway won the 1998 all-ire with U21's Padraic Joyce, Declan Meehan, John Divilly, Derek Savage and Michael Donnellan staring. Laois beat them in the all-ireland U21 final that year. The likes of Brian McGuigan, Stephen O'Neill, Eoin Mulligan, Cormac McAnallen (Rip), Kevin Hughes, off the top of my head lost to our minors in 1997.

Pete McGrath would be a good choice, if he could be persuaded. Laois players badly need whipping into shape and have some discipline instilled into them. Quite a few of them there too long as well.

Creedon was liked by the players but maybe too much...a lot of displine issues and players in their comfort zone...

He did the right thing stepping down ...Living close by I hope the rest of the county board step down as well they are terrible and everyone in the county knows a big clear out is needed there.

Completely agree with you there especially when you see what tyrone did after was thinking it had completely dried up..i remember Zach tuohy scoring a great goal in a minor semi final before we played Kerry..have they contested one since?

No they haven't Alano. That was 2007 against Derry in a 9 point comeback with 6 min left. Zach was a big loss, he'd backbone a side. Ye lost to Kerry by 2 pts iirc.

Fair point. in fairness we had a few good senior players (Kevin Walsh, Jarlath Fallon, Sean og de Paor etc) to add to that fantastic bunch of underage players who actually did not win an underage title. Somewhat reverse now whereby we won u21 in 2011 and 2013 but could benefit more in the long run from our 2017 team that reached the all ireland final this year. We find it sometimes difficult with the dual issue. I can only imagine in Laois which equally seems split 50 50 ( smaller pop. of course) between the two codes how difficult it can at times although if I am reading it correctly no club football championship games played to date reflects poorly on the County Board.
