Carlow vs Monaghan

Well done Carlow ..! But their game plan against the "bigger" teams is damage limitation.. this was evident towards the end when Monaghan were 4 points up and Carlow still had 13 men behind the ball, Monaghan finally copped on that they just needed to kick the ball back and forth around the middle and just keep possession.. I now see why Dublin were only 4 points up at half time, every time Carlow got a free, they kicked it behind them just to keep possession.. Carlow need a better approach, look at Clare over the past few years and how Armagh (div 3) have turned more attacking this year... If Carlow want to make progress, try and play more attacking football..!

Replying To Rosfan:  "Can we be real here, they did not beat a team a division above them. Yes
They kept Dublin to 8-5 at half time but when they had the chance to win tonight and they did they just ran into tackles and lost the ball. Tonight was the night to make a real statement for Carlow football not beating London and Leitrim."
People do indulge in a lot of wishful thinking alright. " This team can only improve....." " They have a great foundation on which to build on...." Utter tosh. The reality is they've had a great season and have done really well but will they repeat this next year or anytime in the next 5 years? Almost certainly no. Nevertheless, congratulations Carlow on your championship run this year and for going out and giving it everything.

Went to college in Carlow for many years. Know one of them seniors and happy for him after all the bad years. Means the world to carlowvians doing so well. Fell just short. Should be very proud. Hopefully they will make good progress from this.

Have to say I was surprised that Carlow were still in it with 5 minutes to go.They surprised a few people last night not least Monaghan I'd say who needed all their experience to get the job done.
Still, they lost and I'm sure they are disappointed but it will give great encouragement going forward and they can build on it.
Made it difficult for Dublin for good while too and perhaps that was part of why Connolly was so fired up when that side line ball went against Dublin.
They are certainly competitive and difficult to play against.

I hope they dont use those tactics long-term though. They had 15 men behind the ball for the majority of the game. When they had the ball they had nobody to aim at hence they either ran into traffic or passed it backwards. The goal was lucky in the free dropped short and monaghan had no cover which was poor on their part. I watched the game and cringed at it at times. If they play like that, they will be horrible to watch. They have come excellent footballers in Paul Broderick, Brendan and Sean Murphy. Let them express themselves a bit more. Use the defensive blueprint but with the scope to attack at pace. Its not impossible but those tactics should not be in play next year.

I think this is a harsh assessment of Carlow, after all they have been plying their trade in Division 4 whereas Monaghan are a seasoned and very good Divison 1 side. You cannot expect them to come out all guns blazing attacking against Dublin or Monaghan. I am sure if Monaghan meet Dublin this year, they will employ similar tactics, try to make it as difficult as possible and stay in the game. I hope Monaghan can rediscover their form as they have some excellent players and could put it up to the likes of Dublin or Tyrone on that side of the draw.

As for Carlow it is important for them to build on this and get up to Division 3. If they can work on improving their attacking game they could be going places.

I don't think the Carlow plan is damage limitation, I think its just an attempt to make us hard to beat. To that end its been quite effective , what we lack is finishing we needed to add a point to the goal as Monaghan were rattled at that stage, I've been watching Carlow for over 30 years now and this is the most competitive we have been since the mid 80s, what we need to do is build from here, not start from scratch again next year. Promotion is very important but as seen with Clare it can take several attempts but I do believe we will get there.

Every improving side has to do this tighten the defence make yourself hard to play against and develop the team that way. It builds confidence and as important frustrates the opposition. Impressive improvement by ye this summer and the key now is to build on it. It's funny we were ye in games gone by where we were the underdogs and put it up to the favourites fro 60 mins only to fade as we went down the stretch. Probably worked a lot harder back then also than playing in fits and starts now. Probably will take a game we are not favourites in to play to our potential.

Yes.. I think my post last night was a bit harsh on Carlow. I had a few beers in me by then and I was still frustrated by the Monaghan performance. That says a lot for the Carlow performance though, that you did frustrate Monaghan players, management and supporters.!
Yous are definitely going on the right track though and I wish yous luck. Monaghan have proven that coming from a small county with a small pick doesn't mean you can't end up playing division 1 football. I suppose Carlow's challenge though is even greater seeing as Hurling is probably stronger in the county then football. We were rock bottom in the early 00's (we were in Div2B (equivalent to current Div4 today). Carlow actually beat us in the league in 2000 by a point but we were contesting All-Ireland quarter final's by 07, unfortunately we haven't managed to bridge that gap yet. I'm still hoping we can this year.!

Not a nice element to bring into the game. Anyway well played carlow all the same."
Farney - I agree that Carlow supporters booed last night - but I don't agree that all booed. As I am sure you can appreciate - Carlow had supporters there last night who have not gone to a football game of any sort for many years - some were in NCP for the first time ever! As a result many are not up to speed with how things are normally done at matches. Yes many booed but not all! Just a little clarification. I attend most Carlow county games in both codes and most do not boo at most Carlow games!!! That is my experience. One man beside me last night had a Carlow jersey but knew NO player on the Carlow team! Booing is not something that any of us would condone. Anyhow - best wishes to Monaghan - best team last night.

Agree fully Barrowsider - Carlow had to establish a pattern to ensure a platform to give themselves a chance to win. The defence strategy worked - it gave our players a chance to get set up and defend and to win the ball back in turnovers - this they did well in each game. Last night Carlow effected a lot of turnovers - and provided an opportunty to attack as a result.
The future - a lot depends on the senior players I feel and the extent that they influence other players on the panel. Their influence is essential if progress is to be made. The other thing is management. Effective management is needed to ensure a continuity in approach and a set number of achievable goals. If those ingredients are in place - then progress can be made. This years draw was favourable. At home to Wexford - and Leitrim and Monaghan! A lot of work done, a lot of progress and a lot of hard work ahead if more progress is to be made. The players are to be commended and I think they know that they can improve even more. 2018 can be better

I wouldn't be too quick to talk about other supporters, there are a lot of our own who are fond of booing refs and free takers and cheering wides (this drives me mental!)... There were parts of the wexford game that I was embarrassed to be a monaghan supporter cos of the way some of them were going on

Didn't want to bring it up as it may have seemed like sour grapes but every carlow free and kick out was booed.

Carlow supporters did the same particularly the wides. It's not pleasant and shouldn't happen but I think on Saturday night people got carried away due to the closeness of the game.

Monaghan fans were great fun by the way and I'll be supporting them for the rest of the year.

Carlow hopefully will push on from this year and get promoted to div 3

Couldn't agree more. When Carlow got the first few points at the start of the second half and then the goal to go two ahead they had Monaghan on the rack but instead of trying to push on they sat back and invited Monaghan on to them. Monaghan were at sixes and sevans at that stage but Carlow tactics helped them to haul themselves out of a deep hole .I really think Carlow could have won the game if they had played a bit of football like they did against Wexford and Letrim in the second half of both those games.

The booing by Carlow was the worst I have seen.

The booed Monaghan off the field at half time. I don't mind a bit of booing at the ref decisions and frees but the ref and linesman had serious abuse thrown at them and then every free Monaghan got in the second half was booed while they were taking it.

It was not all the crowd but a lot more than you would expect and people who should know better. They were like English soccer fans

Wheras Monaghan fans booing our frees, kickouts and Brendan Murphy was ok ?

Obviously not if that was the case but I didnt hear any of that. Perhaps it was in the stand but the terrace on the opposite had no Monaghan fans booing. To be honest I have never ever seen a Monaghan fan boo an opposition off the field at half time or full time.

Refs get booed by all supporters thats nothing new but the booing and hissing taking the frees (rightly or wrongly awarded) was brutal.

Naturally this is not sour grapes as we won. I was just taken aback. The bitterest rivals we have in Ulster wouldnt have been a patch on it.

Anyway good luck in the next round

You clearly weren't in wexford park when John lacey and ciaran lyng were booed ?? Or the whole team booed when coming on the pitch for second half

The worst I ever seen was the cheering when wexford kicked two wides in a row when ye were 15 points up ... why like?

Or for example in 06 when we bet you in clones and mattie Forde was booed every single time he touched the ball for an incident in a previous game between offaly and wexford. Just an example in case you use spur grapes.

Those in glasses houses shouldn't throw stones
