Did not hear the TG4 comment as I was at the game but Galway sideline were very slow to deal with the Cork threat . Feel sorry for the players as they have given a lot of their time to Galway ladies football

I traveled to the game with my Daughter a very enthusiastic supporter and follower of Ladies Football in Galway. What we witnessed was a complete regression of Ladies Football in Galway for the last 8 years plus. We have been in tight situations before with mis- management etc. This is taking it to to a whole new level. We can complain about Management, Tactics, Injuries but I firmly believe we are not picking the correct type of Footballer at Senior Level. There has been some very valid points made on this forum about how we should progress and some not so good(Personal Opinion). We are in effect in a rebuilding phase in Galway Ladies outside of the tremendous results of Under age. However despite the success at Under age this does not guarantee success at Senior. What I saw on display in Mullingar on Sunday was a Cork Team with 6 Forwards who were extremely good on the Ball well able to take a score and distribute the ball very well. Galway lacked cohesion, passion, flair and above all else the required skill to compete with Cork or any other Team for that matter. You can talk about a 6 week break till the cows come home ,thats what challenges are for all be it not at the same level. We need to go back to the drawing board and maybe have a 5 Year plan. I know 5 Years sounds long but we need it to develop all the outstanding talent we have but are not tapping into. We need a strong hand and Head at County Board level( no disrespect to current Board) and also at Senior Management kasbah1967 (Galway) - Posts: 7 - 21/08/2017 21:22:30 2036187 Link 1 |
A 5 year plan was drawn up, developing the u16 & minors to be senior players. Why did it not come to fruition? No interest in long term investment in players. FireManSam111 (Galway) - Posts: 5 - 22/08/2017 23:12:55 2036589 Link 0 |
There has been a high standard at underage for a few years now, with a very obvious style of play. u14s have been good for a few years, U16s not so much but a massive improvement this year. Wether that was down to a change of management or an influx of the most talented Group of underage players in Galway possibly ever is to be debated. I personally think it was a bit of both. Minor have been very good for numerous years as well until this year where they got absolutely picked apart by cork. JimmyShoeShine (Galway) - Posts: 196 - 23/08/2017 10:42:47 2036673 Link 0 |
Lack of an organised club calendar is the most pressing issue for clubs. Clubs are haemorrhaging players due to being unable to give set dates for games and games getting changed last minute. How are players supposed to give up their time when our fixtures are completely all over the place. 50shadesofShea (Galway) - Posts: 149 - 23/08/2017 11:22:59 2036688 Link 1 |
There is obviously no emphasis on delevopment, youth and planning when some of the most successful underage players we have ever produced as a county were allowed walk from our senior panel. Having seen the u16s and minors this year we seem to have another talented bunch on the horizon again.Hopefully the same mistakes wont be repeated and they can be integrated into senior players. dunphy1 (Galway) - Posts: 30 - 24/08/2017 11:50:05 2037083 Link 0 |
The strength and conditioning coach that is with Mayo ladies this year was with Galway ladies for the 2 years previous?! Galway down and out and Mayo beat Cork to get into an All Ireland Final.. Why did the county board ever let her go? FireManSam111 (Galway) - Posts: 5 - 02/09/2017 22:25:24 2042007 Link 0 |

I totally agree. There should always be a handover of info if a coach isn't staying on but does this really surprise anyone? This is Galway.

Can someone explain to me why this county board have broken from the tradition of having the Senior, Intermediate and Junior A finals in the one venue on the same day? It was the highlight of the club scene in Galway, having three big games in one venue always draws a massive crowd which is a great experience for the club players. Terrible decision to change it, we know have one game on in Headford, one in Clonbur and one in Menlough. Impossible to get to see all three games. Very frustrating. Another backward step taken. Not fair on the club players either...junior andintermediate in particular playing games in front of small numbers all year and the big day comes and they are strewn across the county and performing with much fewer people there. its almost a box ticking exercise- get the games played. On the other note of the galway team- it seems everthing is being put into them at the expense of the club scene and to thus far no avail- very disappointing with a massive financial outley squares_edge (Galway) - Posts: 680 - 07/09/2017 21:30:05 2043988 Link 0 |
That's exactly the point being made, it is extremely unfair in the club players. Another bad decision, another backward step in Galway.

Kik/Clonberne won the senior, beating Corofin by a point or two. Not sure as there wasn't a scoreboard jakemax (Galway) - Posts: 210 - 09/09/2017 16:08:16 2044409 Link 0 |
Surely having the three games in one venue would have been more profitable as well as having a much bigger crowd for the club players to play in front of. Not a very well planned move in my opinion. JimmyShoeShine (Galway) - Posts: 196 - 10/09/2017 12:00:23 2044589 Link 0 |
I think that it was certain older influences in the squad that expressed a wish for change as regards the s&c coach. Also interesting to note another former manager Barry Downey leading monivea to a big win over Tuam yesterday

From what I have heard, that is simply not true. Players did not make the decision on who was and who wasn't part of the management. There are plenty of good S&C coaches out there and we shouldn't be lamenting one particular coach who decided to move on. The lack of fitness and sharpness shown against Cork is not the result of losing last years S&C coach. Any half decent S&C coach would have prepared a team to last longer than 15 minutes. Galway looked like a team who had done NO fitness training at all.

I had expected Corofin to make a comeback this year and take at least on title but it didn't happen for them. Rosin Leonard was a big loss but I have to admit that they were beaten by a Kilkerrin/Clonberne team playing poorly. Kilkerrin Clonberne team looked tired perhaps because many of them had a long season with county teams and their football was not up to their usual standards. Unfornately the two best players on the field were not county players last year. There have been some wonderful finals between these two teams but this years was not of the standards of past finals. perhaps Claregalway were a bit unlucky too. the lost by one point in their semi to Corofin. Dunmore put up a good score against K/C aswell. Overall I believe the club standard has fallen off a bit. Nobody close to Carnacun. crusher (Galway) - Posts: 137 - 13/09/2017 09:59:34 2045540 Link 0 |
i heard Claregalway would have beaten Corofin if it hadn't been for the man in the middle who had a stinker. Would agree that club standard has dropped significantly at all levels, not just at senior. Menlough Skehana have to be one of the poorest sides to reach an intermediate final in as long a day I can remember. Massive achievement for a club their size to make a final, but they were very poor. I think a huge issue in Galway is the lack of coverage club games get. There was little or no build up to our county finals on the Ladies Facebook pages. Other counties use their Facebook pages to post reports on varies club games, photos of club games and player profiles of club players. It just makes club football more attractive and greats a bit more buzz about ladies football. Galway board are awful at promoting the game. Absolutely awful.
