The search for a new Wicklow senior football manager doesn't seem to be nearing a conclusion as one of the favourites for the role has pulled out of the race to succeed Johnny Magee.

Ballinteer St John's manager and Wicklow under-21 coach Gail Dunne was rumoured to be a leading contender to fill the role, but he is set to remain with the Dublin club, ruling him out of the race.

Selection committee chairman Colm Finnegan revealed that they have interviewed six people for the position and one person will be chosen from that in the coming weeks.

Speculation in Wicklow GAA circles is that former Roscommon manager John Evans and ex-Louth boss Colin Kelly were two of the candidates interviewed.

Dunne admitted to the Wicklow People that he was 'honoured' to be asked to go for the position, but stressed that it was not the right time for him.

"It's the ultimate honour to manage your county but with Ballinteer St John's pushing for promotion and with the season up there not finishing until at least October, I felt that I had to commit to them," said Dunne.

"One thing about me is that I'm loyal and if I couldn't give 100 per cent I wasn't going to give 99 per cent."
