Maurice Fitzgerald says he's "very excited" to be joining Kerry's backroom team and feels he has "big shoes to fill".

The two-time All-Ireland SFC winner, who replaced the out-going Diarmuid Murphy, had his appointment rubber-stamped last week before guiding his native St Mary's to a third successive South Kerry title last weekend.

Asked by the Irish Independent whether or not he had any reservations about joining Eamon Fitzmaurice's backroom team, he responded: "None, is the answer, none.

"I am very excited by the move to the Kerry management team as I love Kerry football. I am privileged to have been asked and excited about being involved. I am really looking forward to that journey now.

"You probably know me over the years, I don't plan anything much at all. What is for you will happen. I am not clear in my thinking right now but it would be remiss of me not to say that the only reason the opportunity presented itself was Diarmuid Murphy, after six years, has decided to take some time out.

"I have big shoes to fill . . . a lot of credit must go to Diarmuid for a great job he did and the commitment he has shown to Kerry as player and then as a selector. I am excited about my elevation and looking forward to it."
