Former Cork great Mick McCarthy

A social media campaign has started aimed at persuading Cork County Board to name one of the stands in the redeveloped Pairc Ui Chaoimh in memory of the late John Kerins and Mick McCarthy.

Avid amateur historian and passionate Cork GAA fan JJ Hurley from Belgooly has set up a Facebook page, titled 'John Kerins and Mick McCarthy Memorial Stand at Páirc Uí Chaoimh', calling on Rebel chiefs to honour the memory of 1989/90 All-Ireland football winners Kerins and McCarthy who both tragically died at a young age.

His page has attracted over 1,500 likes so far and when it was put to him by The Evening Echo that there is no shortage of deceased Cork GAA legends who would be worthy of a similar tribute he replied: "I can certainly see their point, with names such as the late Con Murphy, Sean McCarthy and JJ Walsh coming to mind but I do think Mick McCarthy and John Kerins are unique.

"They were lost to their families and the GAA community at such a young age, they were never able to fulfill a lifetime of service to the association which I'm sure they would have."
