Everton and Ireland star Seamus Coleman is a big fan of his fellow county man Michael Murphy.

Coleman is one of 12 nominees up for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award tomorrow night and in an interview with the national broadcaster, he revealed his admiration for the 2012 All-Ireland winning Donegal captain.

When asked who his favourite other sportsperson is, he answered: "One of my favourite players for Donegal is obviously Michael Murphy.

"I think he's a great ambassador for Donegal, he's a great person off the pitch and on the pitch he's a fantastic player. I'll stick to a GAA player and say Michael Murphy."

The full-back also spoke about how his GAA background helped him make it as a professional footballer.

"Yeah, without a doubt, I've always said that. Since I was young playing for Killybegs U-10s, U-12s right up to minor, we were a successful group, we won most things at underage level.

"We were quite a committed group, we were a tight bunch of lads but we were all motivated, we'd get up, go training at eight in the morning, stuff like that.

"I think that that definitely helped me, the commitment side of things, the motivation side of things.

"I took that into Sligo Rovers and I took it over here as well. I've definitely got that mentality and I think it's stood me well."
