A court heard yesterday that Dublin footballer Jonny Cooper was asleep and defenceless as he was repeatedly stabbed in the face and neck in a frenzied knife attack in September.

The Irish Independent reports that Judge John Lindsay refused the accused bail at Cloverhill District Court due to the seriousness of the offence, with Cooper alleged to have been "stabbed nine times in the neck and face with a knife in an unprovoked and frenzied attack".

Garda Sergeant Brendan Staines told the court that Cooper was asleep and defenceless at the time.

The 24-year-old was rushed to the Mater Hospital, requiring stitches after the incident took place in the early hours of September 20, at Dorset Street Upper, in Dublin.

Earlier in the month, Cooper had lined out at centre-back in Dublin's All-Ireland SFC semi-final defeat to Donegal at Croke Park.
