Niall Carew was last night officially ratified as the new Sligo senior football manager.

The Kildare native had quit his role as Waterford manager earlier this year, after two years at the Na Deise helm.

He previously worked as forwards coach for his native Kildare between 2008 and 2012, when Kieran McGeeney was in charge of the Lilywhites.

Carew succeeds Pat Flanagan as Sligo boss and is expected to include former Kildare forward Ronan Sweeney - who worked alongside him as assistant manager / coach in Waterford - in his Yeats County senior management team.

It has been confirmed that Carew will also take charge of the Sligo U21s.
