Fermanagh veteran Niall Cassidy has retired from intercounty football.

The 34-year-old defender was suspended for the Ernemen's back-door clashes with Wexford and Mayo but would have been available for a third-round Qualifier this weekend had the northerners held on for a famous win in Castlebar on Saturday. Instead, he draws the curtain on his intercounty career...

"I was disappointed because I got the suspension but I trained as hard as I could as I felt we would beat Mayo. We could have," the Roslea Shamrocks clubman says in The Belfast Telegraph. "If the referee had have done things differently, then Fermanagh could have won."

Cassidy hopes that there will be continuity in the Fermanagh camp and that Down legend Pete McGrath stays on as manager for a fourth season: "He has the side set-up the way he wants and has got far in his three years. There is a great camaraderie in the panel now. I think another year in Division Two would help and they should be pushing to keep Pete and as many players as possible."
