Two-time All-Star calls it a day

Fermanagh's Barry Owens
Fermanagh's Barry Owens has retired from inter-county football following last Saturday's qualifier loss at the hands of Laois.

A championship debutant in 2001, the Teemore clubman's displays at full-back were key as the Ernesiders reached the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final in 2003 and the semi-final a year later.

In 2004 he earned the distinction of picking up the county's second All-Star award by following in the footsteps of Peter McGinnity (1982).

Two years later he was honoured with a second All-Star award while the 2008 Ulster SFC final replay defeat by Armagh was the one that got away.

The 32-year-old returned form heart surgery that year to play his part in the race for the Anglo-Celt Cup but he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the replay.

In recent times, his versatility saw him lining out in the full-forward line and he scored 1-1 against the O'Moore County at the weekend.
