Round
Played at Cavanacarragh Hurling Park
Sunday 28 June 2009
Lisbellaw St Patrick's, 5 gls. 14 pts
Burt, 1 gl. 12 pts.
This was Lisbellaw senior hurlers at their terrifying best, when they literally swept their visiting opposition off the score sheet by a massive score of 5 goals 14 points for they awesome St Patrick's side to 1 goal 12 points for the truly defeated visiting Burt team. A new and exciting feature of a partially revamped Lisbellaw side was the introduction of two new players, in goals Dwayne McPhillip's made his debut in the number "1" shirt where unlike his opposite number conceded only one major score. Up field in at right corner forward spot was Eoin Markey who dramatically announced his presence, when he blasted home two superbly taken goals. An newish entrant was St Patrick's left corner forward Rory Porteous who quickly showed his manly presence, when he repeatedly dislodged the slithor from many a defending north Donegal man to then very effectively distribute they ball to his avariciously scoring mates. Lisbellaw have yet again seamlessly introduced new blood into their team to continue on their winning way.
The Game -the first half
It was the visitors centre half forward Nial Campbell who after his sides was award a close in free, which effortlessly popped over his opponent's cross bar to begin this games scoring. He was quickly joined in this mini But scoring spree by his team mate and full forward Ronan McGahey to put the north Donegal side two points in front. However their opponents and hosts Lisbellaw quickly brought their visitors scoring dominance to a permanent end, when new comer and right full forward Eoin Markey blasted the slithor into the Burt net to begin an afternoon of untroubled St Patrick's scoring dominance. Lisbellaw's mid-fielder Brendan McGarry extended his sides modest lead when he pucked over St Patrick's first two points from play. They far from subdued Burt side registered their third point by ace scorer Nial Campbell from a previously awarded free. With the games second quarter now entered, Lisbellaw's Declan McGarry, Karl Kehoe and Matt Teague added three vital points to demonstrate St Patrick's dominance over a far from subdued visiting Burt side. Though the north Donegal side had two further points from frees courtesy of Nial Campbell, it was the very inform Lisbellaw lads who were obviously on top in all sectors. However whilst Burt registered this half's first score Lisbellaw's Sean Corrigan popped over his sides seventh point.
Half time scores
Lisbellaw St Patrick's, 1 gl. 7 pts, Burt, 0 gl. 5 pts.
As in the games opening half it was Burt's ace scorer Nial Campbell who again registered the concluding half's first scorer another well taken eight point and from play. That last minor score gave the north Donegal side the green light for a more ambitious score, which they registered courtesy of Anthony Coyle who momentarily raised the visitors flagging morale. Lisbellaw's scoring retaliation was slow of coming, and when it came it was of major proportions, when Declan McGarry fired in a massive green flag raising strike from over 70 metres sailing over defenders and fellow forwards to land securely in the Burt net for St Patrick's second goal. With the third quarter almost ending that last major score opened the scoring flood gates for St Patrick's, with almost immediately Lisbellaw's Sean Corrigan and Dermott Curran popped over their sides eighth and ninth points bringing the early third quarter scoring to Lisbellaw 2 goals 8 points and 1 goal 6 points for Burt. Though they later side registered seventh point it from a free by Nial Campbell, it was quickly submerged by St Patrick's third goal, which was blasted in by their first sub Dermott Curran who neatly collected the slithor from the fast maturing Rory Porteous. With the end of the matches third quarter, and the games score sheet now reading 3 goals 9 points for the very triumphant Lisbellaw to 1 goal 7 points for Burt there was only one way this match was heading. And unlike the previous Sunday's disaster it was heading the Donegal way. North or south. With less than a quarter of the game to complete the St Patrick's side up their pace and their skills. To let up for the vanquished was the order of the day, and prove Lisbellaw added further 2 goals 6 points to a modest 5 points for the visitors. As in most cases it defeated who struck first an eight and ninth points from Nial Campbell to attempt to cut into their opponents massive lead. But this was Lisbellaw's scoring afternoon, and they then began to copper fasten their massive victory with less than ten minutes to full time, when firstly Declan McGarry clipped over his sides tenth and eleventh points. But his side's major step up came from a proven goal scorer Eoin Markey blasted his and his second and his side's fourth goal from play. Then cream on the cake when Dermott Curran fired home his second and his sides fifth and final goal from play. Lisbellaw attackers spent the remaining minutes off adding 2 more valuable points from Declan McGarry to complete a great day scoring for the brilliant Lisbellaw. For the vanquished Burt had some consolation points from frees by their only scoring threat, Nial Campbell. The victorious Lisbellaw have little time to savour their great win for on Tuesday 30th June, 2009 they take on Cuchullains in the Armagh Senior Hurling League away.
