Lory Meagher Cup
Round "b"
Played at Breffini Park
Saturday, 13 June, 2009.
Cavan 2 gls. 9 pts.
Fermanagh, 2 gls. 15 pts.
In the roller-coaster, which is Fermanagh senior hurling the visiting Ernesiders redeemed themselves with a well deserved away win over their Cavan hosts. Though it was the Breffini side that dominated the games first quarter, when their ace scoring centre half Paul Sheridan forward pucked over six answered points, one from play and the rest from frees. Finally the apparent lack lustre Fermanagh side got their defending and scoring strategies in order, when firstly the Erneside defenders lead by full back Fergus Bannon curtailed the scoring antics of almost faultless centre half forward and then lead by the smallest man on the pitch and right full forward Sean Corrigan, who began his sides after noon scoring by popping over a well taken point from a previous awarded free. Whilst the games opening quarter's dominance and successful scoring forays could unquestioning go this games hosts Cavan. Then the following second quarters dominating side must go to the visiting team. Who between the matches sixteenth and twenty fifth minutes the Ernesiders match their opponents score-for-score. This hectic mini quarter saw Fermanagh attackers like their centre half back Declan McGarry who pucked over his sides second and third points from play. His diminutive team mate and right full forward Sean Corrigan now chalked up another three points from play, to bring this games scoring in the late first half to 6 points each. With just over five minutes to this matches interval Fermanagh now stopped playing scoring patsy and started to go ahead, when their third scoring ace and full forward Dermott Curran fired over his sides seventh moral boosting point from play. The Erneside scores now came fast and accurate, with further points from the unerringly accurate Sean Corrigan who pucked over his sides eight point from a previously awarded free. With quantity you have inevitably quality, which came on the eve of this games interval when Fermanagh's left corner flying machine Andrew Breslin who adroitly seized on an incoming slithor and then ran at his opponents defences and whilst doing so blasted the ball into his opponent's net for his sides first goal. With the late opening half scores now registering 6 points for the hosts Cavan to 1 goal 8 points. That first major score for their visiting opponents particularly when it flashed up on the park score board motivated the Breffini boys into getting one for themselves, which was claimed by their right half forward Edward Dalton. With the
opening half's time nearly up it was left to the scoring master of the afternoon Fermanagh to claim the first half's last score a well taken point from Declan McGarry.

Second half
More Erneside Dominance
On the games resumption their was feint resemblance to matches first half, true it was Cavan who registered the first score a point from Paul Sheridan, but where the chronology broke down, when the visiting Fermanagh then got the next score an tenth point Declan McGarry and from play. Then the Ernesiders now went into top gear with a brilliantly taken goal came from the boot of full forward David Slevin to bring the early final half scoring to 1 goal 7 points for Cavan to 2 goals 10 points for
Fermanagh who went further in front when their point scorer-in-chief Sean Corrigan popped over his side's eleventh point from a previously awarded free. All these decisive scores were all registered well before this games third quarter was up. The early first half wonder scorer Paul Sheridan came back into the scoring limelight, when he pucked his sides eight and ninth points from frees. But right back came for Fermanagh with a twelfth point by their centre half back Declan McGarry to keep the scoring distance between the Ernesiders and their opponents at safe distance. With this game entering its fourth and final quarter, the previously under the cosh Breffini outfit stepped up scoring and other pressures, some which required the repeating flashing of the red card. But more anon. The last ten minutes saw in the Fermanagh some particularly heroic defending from their goalie Peter McEvoy, substitute back Cathal McGarry who safely defended and long pucked the slithor far and accurately down field. With five minutes to the end of normal time. Both sides swapped both major and minor scores. Points came first, with the Erneside three points from same scorer, Sean Corrigan, who with the last trio of scorers registered a fantastic eight points. The firmly defeated Cavan side had only one point to show in the last hectic minutes. As if to savour the last wine to last both teams went for majors at almost the final whistle. The more ambitious Fermanagh side banging home first from the stick of their left half forward Brendan McGarry. Then the Cavan hosts and most of this game final half's second fiddlers came next to register a major score, when Mark McEntee blasted home for the Breffini boys.
