Fermanagh footballer Ryan Carson can take some consolation after his county's defeat to Cavan in the Ulster SFC after picking up the Quinn Insurance Ulster GAA Writers' Association award for May. The Newtownbutler clubman re-appeared on the county scene earlier this season after an absence of around five years and made his senior championship debut against Down, at Brewster Park, last month. "That was the first time I played full-forward since my under-21 days," said the 26-year-old. "I never even thought I would be considered for such an honour. When I see the names of great players who have won in the past, I am really honoured to have my name alongside theirs." It was quite a return for the towering 6'2", 14 stone attacker as he lofted over six points - five frees - against favourites Down, as Fermanagh knocked the Mourne men out of the Ulster race. Fermanagh failed to find theor foram against eth Breffnimen but Carson will now spearhead Fermanagh's assault on the qualifiers as they aim to repeat the form of 2004 which took them to the All Ireland semi-final. The electrical power linesman, who is based outside London, received his award from Declan Reilly, Quinn Group Commercial Sales Manager for Ireland, at a reception in Mulligan's Bar Newtownbutler. His award includes a Quinn Insurance-sponsored sports voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, specially designed silver cuff links from Omeath jeweller Gareth Mallon and training gear from O'Neill's International Sports. He will also receive two tickets and overnight accommodation for the Quinn Insurance Ulster GAAWA annual banquet, on November 24, in the Slieve Russell Hotel.
