Lory Meagher Cup round-up
June 07, 2009
Leitrim, Donegal and South Down all enjoyed opening round wins in the new Lory Meagher Cup fourth tier hurling championship on Saturday.
Leitrim withstood a determined second half comeback from Fermanagh to triumph by 1-12 to 0-14 at Brewster Park. The accurate free-taking of Clement Cunniffe helped the visitors to a six-point interval lead and a goal just after the restart had them nine clear.
But with Ryan Bogue helping himself to 0-12, Ryan O'Donnell's charges came storming back to leave just the minimum between the sides in the end.
A Kevin Campbell-inspired Donegal also had to work hard in the second half to keep Cavan at bay in Letterkenny, eventually winning by 0-21 to 1-13. Michael Carr goaled for the visitors late on, but it came too late to save them from defeat.
Donegal led by 0-10 to 0-6 at half-time, and with Campbell registering 0-15 from placed balls, they widened the gap before Cavan came back at them in the closing stages.
In yesterday's other first round clash, South Down came away from Omagh with a 5-6 to 3-9 victory over Tyrone.
