Corrigan confident Fermanagh can prevail
June 06, 2009
Former Fermanagh player and manager Dominic Corrigan is confident that the Erne County can register their first Ulster SFC victory over Cavan in almost a century this evening.
Fermanagh have never beaten their more illustrious neighbours in Breffni Park, but the Kinawley clubman is taking the view there is a first time for everything.
"Cavan was the dominant force in Ulster football, but that was long before my time," said Corrigan, who led the Ernemen to an All-Ireland quarter-final appearance in 2003.
"Cavan has only won one Ulster title in my time - we have won none, but we wouldn't look at their history as being in the slightest way intimidating. What Cavan did 50 years ago will have no bearing on what they're going to do now."
He went on to say: "This present crop of Fermanagh players is far more experienced, far more used to the big-time than their Cavan counterparts. That has much greater relevance than Cavan's All-Ireland and Ulster records.
"Fermanagh would have absolutely no fear, no inhibitions about playing Cavan - in fact they would look forward to playing them. Maybe the Cavan team of 40, 50 years ago would have intimidated teams long before the fixture came around, but now everybody in Fermanagh is looking forward to taking on Cavan."
The schoolteacher feels Tommy Carr will be disappointed with the impact he has as Cavan manager so far.
"I thought he would bring momentum, as any fresh voice does. I'm sure Cavan will be disappointed, and Tommy Carr. Carr's a crafty enough fella, a top quality coach, and he won't be going out to genuflect to Fermanagh, but I don't think he has the quality and experience in terms of players to deal with Fermanagh."
