McGrath named Ulster 'Player of the Year'

September 12, 2008
Fermanagh's Martin McGrath has been named as the Ulster GAA player of the year for the second time in his playing career. The Erne midfielder last received the accolade back in 2004 when he helped his side to a first-ever All-Ireland semi-final where they were defeated by Mayo after a replay. This year saw McGrath lead the Erne charge once again from centre-field as Fermanagh reached the Ulster final in search of a first provincial crown, but were once again the victims in a replay with provincial kingpins Armagh claiming their seventh Anglo-Celt Cup in a decade. Both Fermanagh and All-Ireland finalists Tyrone have five All Stars apiece on the side, Armagh have four and Monaghan's Tommy Freeman makes up the 15 players. "I think a few players could have got this before me but I am delighted to receive it," said McGrath at last night's ceremony at the Armagh City Hotel. "It was a reasonably good season and the award is really for the Fermanagh team and management."
