Past games count for nothing, says Donegal assistant manager McGonigle

Donegal will renew acquaintances with Fermanagh this weekend in what is a repeat of last year’s Ulster SFC final and assistant manager Paul McGonigle is wary of the threat that the Ernesiders will pose to their Anglo Celt Cup ambitions.

The Ti Chonaill side prevailed on a scoreline of 2-18 to 0-12 last June but McGonigle insists that they are not reading too much into that result ahead of their trip to Brewster Park on Sunday.

“We take every Championship on its own merits and this is going to be a very difficult task,” he remarked to The Irish News.

“Any team that has to travel away for its first game will find challenges.

“We had the benefit of three games before last year’s final, but this year is totally different.

“We have played Fermanagh a lot in recent times and it is our fourth match against them, and the players all know each other well and, of course, Rory Gallagher knows all about Donegal.

“They have a good record and our sole focus is on Sunday.”
