Fermanagh will be hoping to use the upcoming Dr McKenna Cup campaign to assess new talent ahead of 2019, according to team selector Ronan Gallagher.

The Ernesiders will be the first Ulster county to see competitive action for the new season when they take on Ulster University on Saturday afternoon in Derrygonnelly (throw-in 1pm).

Last year saw Rory Gallagher's team gaining promotion to Division 2 of the National League before going on to reach their first Ulster SFC final in an even decade.

"Everybody is trying to find a couple of new players (in the McKenna Cup)," Ronan Gallagher is quoted saying by BBC Sport.

"There's stories all over the country of players getting a run in pre-season competitions and then keeping their places.

"We'll be hoping that will be case for us because it will be such as step up for us this year in Division 2.

"We want to be as competitive as we can in that division and the McKenna Cup will help with that."
