Ward relishes sixth success

Derrygonnelly's Paul Ward.

Derrygonnelly Harps’ forward Paul Ward picked up his sixth championship medal last Sunday and admitted that it was as good as his first.

Ward has been involved in six of the club’s seven county finals and is now looking forward to their latest Ulster club SFC campaign.

When asked by the Fermanagh Herald if winning a sixth county title dilutes the euphoria from winning earlier titles, Ward stated that certainly wasn’t the case.

“I’ve had the experience of losing one in 2008 and I know what it’s like. Look, Derrygonnelly have been around long enough without winning championships so you make hay when you can and I’ll be around long enough watching them so I’ll enjoy it while I’m at it. You look out at the crowd afterwards and you couldn’t get sick of winning,” said Ward.

“Each one has its own merits, but there were questions asked of us this year about hunger and not producing the quality of performances in the first few games. So it was good to come out here and put on a show. You kick 2-16 in a county final, concede ten points, no goals, I think we put on a good show. This ranks fairly high for me, that’s for sure.”

On Ulster he said: “We’ve won the four in a row, so the next target is Ulster. The first two years we were finding our feet. I think last year we were probably unfortunate not be in an Ulster final, that was a situation of our own making to a degree.

“We’ve a big league semi final to get through, but we’ll prepare well, we’ll probably get up to the Monaghan final. We think we have a starting 15 and the squad depth to compete with anyone in Ulster so we just have to go at them and put on a good show.”
