Bernard Brogan was a happy man after skippering Ireland to victory over Australia on Saturday.

To complete a memorable night for the Dublin attacker, he also received the man of the match award as Joe Kernan's men reclaimed the Cormac McAnallen Cup.

"It's something I never thought I'd do," Brogan is quoted in the Irish Daily Star.

"When Joe (Kernan) gave me the call eight or nine weeks ago and asked me to lead the team, he told me to keep it quiet for four weeks, which was a horrible thing to do.

"It's a phenomenal honour to go out and lead your country. To go out with players who you have played against all year and to lead those guys and for them to be looking at you when you are talking to the group, it's an amazing feeling.

"I've never done it before and going up the steps was just the icing on the cake. It's something I never dreamed of.

"The effort the players gave over the last few weeks has been amazing. I think there were 50 or 60 lads over the 12 weeks and every one of them that didn't make it were gutted."
