A high work rate was central to Dublin's 12-point defeat of Tipperary today according to Shane Durkin.

Ger Cunningham's side took the game to the visitors right from the off and never eased their foot off the pedal.

After the final whistle, the half-back told RTE Sport: "Yeah, it was a really good performance.

"I suppose it's been a long pre-season for us, dating back to last July when we were on the wrong side of a result against Tipp so we've had a good couple of months to get ready and we just really wanted to go out today and give a performance for our first league game and I think we did that."

Like the majority of those in attendance, Durkin was impressed with the newcomers in the Dublin set-up.

"For the Walsh Cup, Ger was adamant he was going to give lads a run and everyone was going to have a chance.

"And I think you saw today with a couple of the young lads; Chris Crummey, Cian O'Callaghan, Colm Cronin - who of course was there last year - really playing well today. So I think the Walsh Cup served us very well and you can see today lads took their chance."

He concluded: "To concede 14 points against Tipperary with that forward line is a credit to the backs and the performance they put in, and also to the forwards.

"I think it's a sign of our work rate and our hooks and blocks. We knew Tipp were going to come after half-time and it was important for us to get a couple of scores, and I think we did that."
