Fixture clashes pose dilemma for supporters

September 28, 2014

Ready for Sunday. Intermediate finalists, Down's Kyla Trainor and Niamh McGowan, Fermanagh's Aisling Moane and Marita McDonald. Senior finalists, Cork's Vera Foley and Roisin Phelan with Dublin's Sinead Goldrick and Carla Rowe. Front, Wexford's Ciara Donnelly and Alisha Jordan from New York

There is disquiet in Cork and Dublin at the fact that important SHC games in both counties are clashing with the All-Ireland senior ladies football final this afternoon.

At the same time as the two counties will do battle for the Brendan Martin Cup at Croke Park, two Dublin SHC quarter-finals will take place at Parnell Park and O'Toole Park, while Pairc Ui Chaoimh will play host to the two Cork SHC semi-finals.

The unfortunate clash of fixtures means that family and friends of the players will have to make a choice over which games to attend.

However, Cork ladies football manager Eamonn Ryan doesn't have an issue with his team's final going head-to-head with the Na Piarsaigh v Sarsfields and Douglas v Glen Rovers hurling semi-finals.

"I would see no reason why Cork games should be put off the day we are playing," he said recently.

"It is a different organisation. I have asked for Pairc Ui Chaoimh three times this year and I have got it with a heart and a half. We will be in there tonight, no stipulations, no problems. There will still be enough people from Cork to fill Croke Park if they wanted to go. I genuinely believe that."
