Daly and Sheedy linked to Galway hurling post

Dublin manager Anthony Daly jokes with Galway manager Anthony Cunningham.
Anthony Daly could be considered for the Galway hurling manager's job if he steps down from his role with Dublin.

The position is officially vacant after Anthony Cunningham's three-year reign ended with last month's All-Ireland qualifier loss to Tipperary, but the St. Thomas' man is keen to continue.

However, he faces a challenge from Mattie Kenny, his former 1987 and '88 All-Ireland winning team-mate Brendan Lynskey and current U21 manager Johnny Kelly, who are the other nominees. Kenny had served as a selector with Cunningham for two years before stepping down this time last year.

It's understood that all four candidates will be allowing their names to go forward for interview, while the Galway management committee may consider other candidates such as Daly - assuming he becomes available - and 2010 Tipperary All-Ireland winning manager Liam Sheedy before recommending a manager for 2015 in mid-September.

"We would always say that the management committee reserves the right, if they see fit, to consider any other candidates who they think should be the manager. So that means it is open to anyone," Galway hurling committee secretary Pat Kearney is quoted in the Connacht Tribune.

"There will be interviews taking place, but we would hope to have a manager appointed before the next round of the Galway hurling championship games on the weekend of September 14 or 21.

"Some of the candidates are away on holidays at the moment, so there will be nothing happening for another two weeks."
