No pressure on Down, Woods insists

Down's Conor Woods gets away from Antrim's Ciaran Clarke

Conor Woods insists Down have nothing to lose in tomorrow's Christy Ring Cup derby clash with Antrim.

Even if they lose in Cushendall, the Ardsmen will be guaranteed another match in the competition thanks to last weekend's first round win over Roscommon.

"It was a big disappointment for us not to get into the league (Division 2B) final and push for promotion," the full forward told the Irish News.

"But the lads who stuck together got through Roscommon last week and we feel that our reward is having a crack at Antrim here. Whether we win, lose or draw, we're guaranteed another game after it, so we feel there's no pressure on us at all. Everyone is looking forward to it really."

Marty McCallon's team has suffered a number of defections this year, but Woods says they're only focused on the players still involved.

"Going forward, we know who's in, even going to training we know who'll be there and who's committed and it's a bit more satisfying. It's been a tough year for some of the younger lads because it's there first year and it has probably been a rude awakening for them.

"But getting the win over Roscommon has given us a bit more belief and confidence going forward."
