At Feile Peil An Riocht U14 footballers had games with Clonduff, Drumaness and Bredagh before exiting at the semi-final stage to Saval.

 

The Senior Footballers got their first win of the season with a five-point victory over visiting Longstone. A huge crowd thronged Dunavil and thanks to the car park stewards for ensuring the road was kept clear and everyone got in and out of the match safely and with the minimum of fuss; also to the landowners for use of their fields. On the pitch An Riocht dictated the play for the first twenty minutes leading six points to two before the 'Stone finished the half strongly to trail by the minimum 0-7 to 0-6 at the break. A cracking Kory Colgan goal gave us breathing space on the restart before four frees and a fine Cormac Poland point from play levelled things with ten minutes remaining. An Riocht really came into their own then outscoring the 'Stone six points to one before the final whistle, a Declan Doyle solo score the pick.

Mayobridge were much too strong for An Riocht in the U14 camogie on Tuesday despite the best efforts of Lauren Marsh in goals and Orna Colgan, Caitlin Small and Nanette Campbell outfield.

 

In the U18 Football An Riocht v Tullylish, we had seven points to spare in a sixteen goal thriller that finished 8-15 to 8-8. Both sides had periods of attacking dominance as both struggled to get the ball out after a score though both put together some good passing moves going forward in an entertaining affair. This was certainly a huge improvement on the lackluster efforts of the previous week from our team.

The Junior Camogs finally got some game time on Wednesday when Drumaness visited Dunavil and we performed well getting the season off to a winning start. The six adult players available all started with Ellie Hughes and Tara Keenan particularly impressive in defence and the thirteen minors were grateful for some game time ahead of their first minor match v Liatroim on 2nd May.

The P5/P6 Footballers entertained Clonduff in three mini games at Dunavil on Thursday evening before a good attendance of parents and family members.

Team 3: Sean Small, Ryan Campbell, James McComiskey, Lucus Dicius, Dylan Marsh, Shea Clare, Conor Collins, Logan Rooney.

 

The U16 Footballers continued in their free scoring style with a 3-21 to 0-5 win at Newry Bosco on Thursday.

 

The Senior Footballers lost in Glenn. A good first half into the wind looked to have set us up for an even better second half but on the restart, the wind dropped as did our play and we were very flat to the finish with the free-flowing home side finishing sixteen points to the good.

In the South Down GAA P5/P6 Football Blitz at Dunavil on Saturday, An Riocht had two teams and enjoyed matches with Atticall, Ballymartin, Burren, CPN and Longstone.

 

Five lucky U12 footballers enjoyed an away day at Croke Park on Saturday playing on the pitch and having a museum tour. The fortunate five were Oisin Davies, Oran McAleenan, Darragh McAlinden, Eoin Sloan and Jayden White.

 

In the U12 Football game between An Riocht and Shamrocks the visitors won by six on a 4-9 to 5-12 scoreline.

 

In the Reserve Football League An Riocht v Carryduff, our team played very well to come away with our first two league points of the season on a 2-16 to 1-14 score line. Carryduff got a greater return from their possession than we did early on and led four one with Thomas Sloan denying them a goal with a great save with his feet. Conor Morgan had opened the scoring for An Riocht and though Dane Mathews kept us in touch with a point, the visitors stretched six two clear by the fifteenth minute.

A Deaglan Morgan goal following a length of the field passing move brought An Riocht right back into it and we led at the break 1-6 to 0-8, Conor Cole and Deaglan Morgan sharing four points.

In a cagey start to the second half scores were scarce but Adam White pointed twice by the fortieth minute with Conor Cole adding his third before Carryduff raised a white flag. It was point for point for the next ten minutes before we put four scores in a row together to lead by six.

Late on Thomas Sloan made two superb saves as the city side went searching for a goal and a late exchange of goals had no bearing on the result.

There is a big push on now to complete the 'Cow Pat' squares, anyone who can help part fill a sheet should collect one and part fill it before returning it for someone else to fully complete.

 

There are still umpires/linesman, gate and car park stewards required for Clonduff's visit on Friday, please fill in the vacancies on the board at the office to ensure everything is covered and no one has too much to do.

There is a 'Girls Activity Night' for 8 to 11 year olds with Aedin on Thursday 27th April from 7pm; call in to give it a try.

 

The Paul Farrell Memorial Cup U14 Football seven-a-side will take place on Saturday at Dunavil. Four Groups will play a round robin before splitting into Cup and Shield competitions. It all gets underway from 10.30am and tea, coffee, sandwiches and hot food will be available.

Good luck to Ronan Campbell and the Down U17 footballers in the Ulster Championship in Fermanagh on Saturday and congratulations to Conor Clarke selected as Down Minor Football captain ahead of the 2017 Championship match v Armagh in Newry on 4th June.

 

On Saturday 6th May An Riocht will host our La Na gClub - Club Day; the GAA celebration of the importance of each club to its community highlighting the important role of our members, players, supporters' and families in our Association and the local community. At Dunavil the day will begin at 10am with our annual U12 Football 9-a-side tournament involving 32 teams from 10 Counties and 2 Provinces. There will be mini Gaelic Games for all from the youngest to the oldest - camogie, football and rounders. There will be poc fada, penalty kicks, free kicks; music and dancing, a parade around the grounds, best 'club' dressed person award, a section as Gaeilge, teas, coffees and burgers and chips, a tree planting etc. If you have ideas let us know asap so we can include them in the day's programme. This is an opportunity for parents and family members of our players to come out and visit the club, see the facilities and activities on offer and watch their children having fun and maybe even join in!
