The P3/P4 Football tournament in Moy and the P5/P6 Football tournament in Warrenpoint were both cancelled due to the weather.

 

In the Minor 'B' Football Final An Riocht beat Clann Na Gael (Atticall/Mitchels) by 4-7 to 2-9 at Saval. Played in torrential rain (which forced the abandonment of the match on the adjoining field) it was a day for the unsung heroes to step up and they did it in style.

Captain Shane Cunningham did a magnificent, disciplined man-marking on the opposition's main score threat, John Joe Eakins stuck to his opponent like glue, Philip Curran oozed class as an attacking defender, Dane Matthews was majestic at centre field with a display of high catching, tackling and blocking, and Patrick McComiskey ran himself into the ground putting in crunching tackles all over the pitch.

Clans opened the scoring but Eoin Sloan soon levelled and An Riocht went ahead when Paddy McComiskey and Liam Rodgers combined to send Ronan Campbell away and cutting in from the left he buried the ball in the net. The same player added a free and we were four clear. Clann's hit back with three in a row and though Conor Clarke replied to break their momentum we had two further scores chalked off when the referee overruled his own umpire on two occasions. Ronan Campbell added two frees and Jack Rafferty a great score from distance before a long range Ronan Campbell free crept in at the angle of bar and post for a fortuitous goal and at the break An Riocht led 2-7 to 0-6.

We missed two goal chances to wrap it up on the restart and Clann Na Gael took a grip scoring 2-2 without interruption to lead by a point with nine minutes remaining.

Eventually we began to go direct and won a penalty which Ronan Campbell coolly put away and though Clanns replied with another free, there was no denying us now and a great passing movement, made even greater in the deteriorating conditions, ended with Ronan Campbell blasting home his fourth goal to make the result safe.

In the Intermediate Football Final An Riocht v Bredagh, the city side were comfortable by the finish. They dominated the opening quarter and were seven points to one clear after fourteen minutes, Alan Davidson and Donal Hughes running amok.

A spectacular goal from Kory Colgan momentarily brought An Riocht back into it but Hughes placed Brian Rice for an immediate reply and An Riocht had it all to do again. Four unanswered points before the break left us trailing 1-8 to 1-6 but on the restart Bredagh were almost in for a couple of goals before Chris Killen pointed at the other end to leave the minimum between the teams. The next big chance came in the fortieth minute but Sean Clarke's effort came back off the bar and was cleared. Bredagh then scored 1-3 in an eighteen-minute period as An Riocht went almost twenty minutes without a score. Bredagh's third goal in added time saw An Riocht fall to a heavy defeat for a second year running.

There's no time for the players to feel sorry for themselves as they are back into action on Wednesday in the first of four must win league games over eleven days to secure the Division Two title.

An Riocht made no mistake at the second attempt in the replayed Intermediate Championship Final at wet and windy Mayobridge on Saturday evening and now progress to represent the County in Ulster next Sunday in Monaghan.

As in the drawn game An Riocht were much the better team in the first half and were comfortably ahead by the break, 2-3 to 0-1, though this time they came out for the second half and won the match 4-6 to 0-3, limiting Longstone to three pointed frees.

Tiarna Donnan and Lauren Clarke scored opening points from play before Longstone replied from a free in the fifteenth minute. There was plenty of goal mouth action with Joanna Sloan at her best to keep out several close calls from the 'Stone forwards before Lauren Clarke scored a cracking first goal for the victors.

An Riocht pushed on and Tiarna Donnan added a second goal after a delightful piece of skill, flicking the sliothar off a defender's stick and finishing it to the net and Lauren Clarke with a great first touch added a point.

Longstone scored a second free on the restart but though they came close on occasions they could not make the major breakthrough they increasingly needed as the clock ran down. Colleen Fearon dropped back to sweep up loose ball and with Clara Killen, Orla McAlinden and Louise Rodgers to the fore, An Riocht defended magnificently.

On the break Aoife McDowell raided up the left wing adding 1-1, her two scores separated by the 'Stone's third and final free, while Lauren Clarke and Aine Fearon added points apiece before Carrie Killen sealed victory with a well taken goal.
