St Jude's All Ireland 7's Report

Dundrum - All Ireland Junior 7's Winners

The footballers of  Dundrum made their sixth trip to St Jude's in Templeogue on Saturday for the All Ireland Junior Football 7's.

Having reached the quarter finals on three occasions and the semi finals twice, hopes were high for the panel of 12.

Kerry teams have dominated this competition in recent times. St John's were the only Down side to win it previously in 2009 with Ballykinlar managing runners up spot in 1996.

First up for Dundrum was the host club St Jude's. In a tight opener the Duns emerged victorious by three points, 2-04 to 1-04.

The second group game was against a very good Coa team from Fermanagh.

The Erne side had current county captain and International Rules star Eoin Donnelly at midfield.

In a high scoring affair it was the Reds who emerged victorious once again, 7-03 to 5-03.

The final game in the group stages was a clash with Fergal Byron's Courtwood outfit from Laois.

The Leinster side included senior team panellist Niall Donohoe in their ranks and he helped them to a 2-08 to 3-05 draw.

It was now the knockout stages with Meath's Curraha standing in Dundrum's way.

In an easier than expected game Dundrum won 4-05 to 1-02.

A tough and physically demanding quarter final saw the Reds oust Lawardane McHales from Mayo to set up a semi final with Sean McDermott's of Birmingham.

That obstacle was overcome with Dundrum persevering to a 2-08 to 1-06 success.

The final arrived in the late afternoon as the Duns came face to face with 2015 champions Brosna.

It was nip and tuck throughout with Dundrum emerging champions on a 2-08 to 0-12 scoreline. David McComiskey and Aidan Fegan getting the goals.

A fantastic day of football came to an end with the Duns on top of the pile.

The Loch an Lae award for the player of the tournament went to Oisin McKibbin. McKibbin's performances in the group stage and up to the quarter final were of the highest order. After a pulled hamstring Oisin unfortunately missed out on the semi final and final.
