CLONDUFF GAC SUMMER DATE FOR YOUR DIARY!

Saturday 27th August - Clonduff U12 LGFA Tournament

CLONDUFF HEALTHY FUN DAY!
It should have happened in July but the weather decided otherwise. It did happen on Sunday 21st August! There was Hurling and Football Championship games for Clonduff teams but time was running out before school re-starts!
There were four teams participating - Yellas, Reds, Greens, Blues and competition was fierce - Ross Carr acted as MC and kept the 'reins' on the competitors as they fought their way through 'Hungry Hippos', 'Minefield', 'Jigsaw', 'Sack Attack', 'Wet Rounders', 'Pass the Balloon' and 'Clonduff Krypton Factor' - Many thanks to Dermot, Maria and Attracta for the novel and innovative games. The Red team, led by Jerome Lynch and Paul O'Hare amassed the most points during the afternoon and were presented with the Cup by Dermot and Attracta, but in truth, despite the rain, they were all winners - the spectators had moved into the club in case a wee bit of rain would wet them but not those taking part! Well done everybody! REMEMBER THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BAD WEATHER - ONLY INAPPROPRIATE CLOTHING!!!!!
Meantime, Stephen Rafferty was setting up his music for the intergenerational Tea Dance - before Francis Quinn's cow was let loose on the pitch for the 'Cowpatition' - where would she do her 'business' and who would be the lucky winner of the £1,000? After a couple of false starts she eventually performed and the calculation were done it was deemed the Kitty Fegan was the lucky winner! Enjoy every penny of it Kitty.
Then it was back into the club to continue with the music/dancing and the evening ended with all those present enjoying the food on offer!
All in all, this was a great Clonduff Day!

DOWN HANDBALL LEAGUES - OPEN TO BOTH MALES AND FEMALES!
Down 40x20 leagues starting again in September - names need to be given to Decky Doyle or Colin Shields asap.

DOWN U12 ACTIVITY DAY IN CROKE PARK

All Down clubs were invited to send five youngsters to Croke Park for the U12 Activity Day on Tuesday 16th August. The boys' names were put into a hat and two drawn out - Max Dursley and Adam Fegan. The same happened for the girls with Eveagh Kelly's and Aoife McKeown's names being drawn out. For the fifth place both sets of names were put into the one hat and Ceallagh Byrne's name was selected.

It was an early start for the children on Tuesday morning - they had to be at Croke Park for 9.30. The Clonduff youngsters were paired with Bryansford for the games which they thoroughly enjoyed. The morning's activity ended with a guided stadium tour before being returned to parents/guardians who had grandstand view in the Cusack Stand. Many thanks to the Down Development Manager Conor O'Toole for organising this magnificent morning for our children.

HURLING

JHC QF Clonduff 2-19 v Castlewellan 0-11
Clonduff got the first score of the game and then allowed Castlewellan to dominate and go into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead before they realised what was at stake. The Yellas produced some brilliant Hurling and led at the break 1-10 to 0-8 - all of the opposition scores coming from frees. Clonduff stepped on the gas in the second half and went into a commanding lead but were reduced to 13 men with 10 mins to go. Clonduff had been subjected to some dubious tackling throughout and unfortunately eventually retaliated and were the ones to be punished. They are into the semi final but will be missing two important players. Team: Niall Quinn, Declan Rooney, Danny Nugent, JJ Gilmore, Darragh Downey, Shane Murray (Capt), Jamie Lynch, John Murphy, Chris Young, Shay Murnin, Fionnbharr Murphy, Lorcan Branagan, Mark Downey, Liam McParlan, Rhys Ward; Subs used: Patrick Branagan, Conor Tumilty, Pearse Branagan, Christopher Lynch

FOOTBALL

PRFC - Castlewellan II 2-4 v Clonduff II 4-17
In the midst of the fun and games in Clonduff Park on Sunday evening there was a small matter of a PRFC QF game to be played in Castlewellan. Clonduff travelled with just 15 players - but what a performance they put on! It didn't start too well - Castlewellan's first attack resulted in the first score of the game - a goal! This didn't phase the boys in Yella - they put over six points in a row only to have their advantage cancelled by another Town goal. Again Clonduff got right back into the game and led 1-9 to 2-0 at the break. The second half was practically one way traffic with Clonduff scoring a further 3-8 to Castlewellan's 0-4 - and they shot 20 wides during the game! Team and scorers: Mark Bradley, Lorcan Branagan, John Brown, Niall O'Hagan, Declan Gribben (0-1), Shay Murnin, Rory McQuaid (0-2), Niall O'Hare (0-3), Conor Lowry, Noel McPolin (0-3), Gary McDonald, Jayme Gribben (0-2), Conor Murray (0-2), Patrick Matthews (2-0), Karl O'Hagan (2-4).
This was a great team performance but a special mention must go to Lorcan Branagan and Shay Murnin who had both turned out for the Hurlers earlier in the afternoon and thanks to Castlewellan for agreeing to change the time of the game which was originally scheduled for the same time as the Hurling.

SD U16 FC - Clonduff 2-10 v Annaclone. 2-4
The Clonduff boys won their first championship group game away to Annaclone on Saturday afternoon. Ten minutes into the second half Annaclone took their players off the field after having a player black carded.
Clonduff team: James Carvill, Kieran Mullholland, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Rory McKernan, Shane Parr, Jamie O'Hagan, Conor Parr, James Keenan, Shay Fitzpatrick, Charlie Kerr, Padraig Wilson, Padraig Kelly, Tom Close, Eamon Brown, Aidan Markey:
Subs used: Sean McCumisky, Conor Fitzpatrick; Other subs; Ryan Woods, Pearce Cunningham, Rhys Rooney.

SFL - Kilcoo 2-11 v Clonduff 2-10
'They' say a two point lead is a dangerous one and so it proved in Kilcoo on Friday night. Clonduff led from the beginning and were perhaps marginally the better team. The Yellas led by 2 points in the final minute when the Kilcoo midfielder collected the ball and seemed to over-carry as he moved in on the Clonduff goal and duly scored. The goal stood though and Clonduff did have a couple of half chances to get something from the game - the final chance hit the outside of the post. Team and scorers: Neil Trainor, Darren O'Hagan, John Brown, John McPolin, Brendan Britton, Rory Grant, Conor Brown (Capt), Aidan Carr (0-1), Niall Tumilty (0-1), Conor Óg O'Hagan, Stephen McConville (0-2), Patrick O'Hagan (0-1), Arthur McConville (2-1), Finbarr McConville (0-1), Barry O'Hagan (0-3); Subs used: Shane McGreevy, Lorcan Branagan, Rían Branagan, Conor Murray.

Senior Championship - Clonduff v Ballygalget

The Seniors travelled to Downpatrick on Saturday 20th August to take on Ballygalget in the first round of the championship; in the last meeting Clonduff dealt with the Ards team very comfortably. It was however a different story on Saturday. The Ards team was well up for the game and battled for every ball and were awarded a penalty mid-way through the first half the ball went wide. Things got better for Clonduff after this when Megan O'Reilly flicked a ball to the net after a great delivery from Paula Gribben and that was the difference at half time. There were a number of positional changes at half time and this seemed to buoy the team and they performed much better. They tackled and hassled and held Ballygalget scoreless in the second half, adding a further1-5 themselves. Whilst the girls performed much better in the second half there is a lot of work to be done before the semi final where they face Liatroim who were huge winners in their QF game. However, it shows the character that is in this team to knuckle down and grind out the result when a lot of things weren't going well. Well done girls!

U16 Championship Shield Clonduff v Aghaderg

The U16 girls played Aghaderg on Thursday 18th August in Clonduff Park in the quarter final of the Championship Shield. They put in a strong performance and finished on a score of 7-12 to 1-2.
