Intermediate Football Championship 13 August 2016 at St Malachy's Park, Castlewellan   Carryduff v Saul

Carryduff got off to a dream start in St Malachy's Park Castlewellan and had Saul on the back foot within the first minute. In the first passage of play Sean McGonigle cleverly drew the Saul defence before feeding full forward Joe McFlynn who finished to the Saul net. Carryduff collected possession from the Saul kick-out and McGonigle was on hand to slot Carryduff's first point over the Saul crossbar.

Caolan Magee (3rd) converted Saul's opening score but Conor McCullogh's fourth minute point restored Carryduff's four p[point advantage. Adam King (5th) kicked wide for Saul when under pressure from a busy Carryduff defence. Michael McGrath (6th) was on target as was Joe McFlynn (7th) to stretch Carryduff's lead. Corner back Mark Morris picked up a yellow card for lazy tackling before Saul settled somewhat when Caolan Magee converted his second free (8th) and Thomas Magennis slotted over (10th).

Neill McGowan had chances for Carryduff but shot wide on his first opportunity in the ninth minute before forcing an excellent save from Saul 'keeper Conor Marron in the twelfth minute. Midfielder Peter Lavery tagged on another point for Carryduff as Saul struggled to contain the Carryduff forward line. Saul had a few opportunities  - Cathal Aranold kicked wide (!3th) before Ciaran Harney fisted Saul's fourth point half way through the first half. Midfielder Adam King picked up a yellow card in the 19th minute.

Joe McFlynn converted a nineteenth minute free to press Carryduff's advantage before James Guinness screwed wide an opportunity to convert in the twentieth minute. Cathal Arnold brought Saul into closer contention, pointing in the  21st minute.  Joe McFlynn missed an opportunity to put Carryduff further ahead twenty two minutes in and corner back Paddy McConnell also saw a yellow card (22nd) for a needless foul on Caolan Magge as the intensity of the game increased. Magee converted the resultant free kick, bringing Saul to within three points of Carryduff.

Sam Burns replaced Saul corner forward Caolan Magee (25th) just before Joe McFlynn bagged his second goal for Carryduff, having been set up by James Guinness. Moments later Carryduff survived a goalmouth scramble - centre half back Donal McKeever was in the right place at the right time to stick his boot to the ball and clear it out of the danger zone.

The final score of the half was claimed by Carryduff Sean McGonigle  (30th) as midfielder Peter Lavery was shown yellow for a late tackle.

Carryduff had a seven point cushion at the break leading 2-07 to 0-06.

Although Michael McGrath opened the second half scoring (33rd) for Carryduff, Saul asserted and had two points from full forward Phillip Traynor ((35th and free, 36th) and, during this period of intense pressure, managed a goal as Carryduff full back Conor McFlynn - attempting to cut out a cross-goal pass - inadvertently put the ball into the Carryduff net.

Sean McGonigle added a further Carryduff point (40th) but Saul's cause was assisted further when Traynor converted a free (41st). Just as Saul were asserting two valuable Carryduff scores in the 42nd minute from Michael McGrath and Joe McFlynn steadied Carryduff. Valuable scores they were too as Saul had a great return claiming four points in a five minute period between the 45th and 50th minutes. Midfielder Adam King pointed half way through the half.  Joe McConnell replaced Rory Fitzsimons in the Saul defence before Ciaran Harney (47th) Phillip Traynor (49th) and Cathail Arnold (50th) all registered scores from play as Carryduff drifted out of the game.

It took a sublime point from corner forward Michael McGrath (51st) to reignite the Carryduff passion and James Guinness's goal (52nd) provided much needed respite and took some of the sting out of Saul's revived efforts. McGrath added what was to be the final score of the game (54th) but there still was much drama to follow. Saul were awarded a penalty with five minutes left to play but Carryduff keeper Mark Hynes managed to get a foot to the place kick and the ball rebounded off the goalpost and out into play before being cleared out of the Carryduff defence.

The teams traded wides in the final minutes before Carryduff ran out deserved winners 3-13 to 1-13 after a steady performance.

All-County Premier Reserve Football Championship  Carryduff v Rostrevor

Rostrevor proved too strong for Carryduff when they visited Páirc Aodha Dhuibh and claimed victory in the All-County Premier Reserve Championship.

Carryduff opened brightly with scores from Ronan McLaughlin(1st) and Ruairi McKay (3rd) before Rostrevor settled with a succession of scores from Thomas Mulholland(3rd) Aaron Fearon (free, 4th) Chris Connolly (7th) and Kevin McGrath (9th). Rory McGrath (12th) kicked Carryduff's third score before Rostrevor rattled an effort off the Carryduff crossbar. Sean Magee's eighteenth minute goal put Rostrevor into a commanding position but Carryduff's Daniel McCartan converted a penalty (20th) to bring Carryduff back into contention only one point behind the visitors. In a period when Carryduff should have not only pressed and advantage but taken control of the game they managed to hit the upright, the crossbar and the goal-post in three successive attacks between the 21sta and 24th minutes.

Rostrevor, on the other end of the field, managed to bag their second goal as Argahl McMahn finished to the Carryduff net (25th). His fisted point (26th) saw rostrevor lead at the break by 2-05 to 1-03.

Points in the third quarter of play from Chris Connolly (33rd and 52nd), Aaron Fearon (34th) and Paudi Parr (51st) effectively ended the game as a contest and Thomas Mulholland's gaol (44th) put the game well beyond any Carryduff comeback. Cian Slevin had managed a point (40th) and Ronan McLaughlin added another ( 45th). Ruairi Mckay got his second score of the game (54th) but a fourth Rostrevor goal Kevin McGrath,, 56th) and final point Sean Magee, 59th) gave Rostrevor a comprehensive victory on a scoreline of 4-10 to 1-06.

Congratulations from all in the club to the Under-16 Footballers who claimed the All-County Under-16 Football League Title. Down GAA Chairman Sean Rooney visited Páitc Aodha Dhuibh to present the League Trophy to the squad and reminded the panel that league titles are won as a result of consistency of performance and this title should provide further aspiration for this group of players. The squad management reminded their charges that this was a momentous occasion for Carryduff GAC as this is the first juvenile All-County football League title that the club has claimed in its history.

Well done lads!  Your club is proud of you and eagerly looking forward to you bringing more success to Carryduff.
