Aughlisnafin GAC club notes

July 18, 2016

The Seniors picked up their first ever piece of silver ware after defeating Saul in the final of the Connolly Cup hosted by Ballykinlar GAC last Friday evening. The 'Fin saw off a spirited Ballykinlar side in the semi final before a narrow but deserved win over a Saul select. The result was all the more remarkable given that the Fin were without their regular keeper and several other players due to holiday and work commitments. This was also the senior team's fourth game in eight days which will do their fitness no harm in the run up to their Junior Championship quarter final game at the end of next month. The 'Fin captain Paul Flanagan, who has had no luck with injuries, suffered crack ribs during the game but did his best to ignore the pain to receive the John Connolly Memorial Trophy from Owen Connolly. We wish Paul a speedy recovery and also Saul player Philp Baker who also had to leave the field with a leg injury. Thanks to both Saul and Ballykinlar for sporting games and also to Ballykinlar GAC for the invitation to take part. And last but not least well done to the players, management and our supporters on their involvement in this historic occasion.

*The seniors played promotion candidates St Paul's and Dundrum last Friday and Monday evening respectively. Despite numerous players unavailable for various reasons the 'Fin managed to not only to fulfil both fixtures but posted 0-14 at home to the Holywood side and 3-10 away to Dundrum. Also it was pleasing to see our minor players Ruairi Toner and Sean Flanagan featuring in both games with Flanagan grabbing his first senior goal against Dundrum. With no minor football team in the Fin this season due to low numbers both lads have been leased to neighbouring clubs for one season. Toner plays with Castlewellan while Flanagan plays for St John's along with Faelan Murphy. We thank both clubs for giving our players the opportunity to allow them to play within their own age group. The 'Fin will be fielding a minor level next season. The seniors resume league duties this Fridaywith a home game against Aghaderg at 7.30 pm.

*With the ongoing holiday period there has been no ladies, juvenile or underage football in the past week. The resumption of action on the field sees our Ladies play against Savalthis Saturday at 7 pm in Annsborough. The U16's host Castlewellan this Thursday at 7.30 pm in the Champonship. The U14's are away to Drumaness next Monday evening at 7.30 pm. The U12's have a 'bye' this Sunday. The Year 6's and Year 4's are travelling to Ardglass this Saturday morning for the Go Games Blitz along with Dundrum, St John's and the host club Ardglass. Games commence at 10.30 am.

*The 'Fin have had good representation at Campa Chormaic in recent years and this year kept up the trend with no less than twelve in attendance. Our club secretary and Cultural Officer Orla Ní Fhlanagáin was also involved as múinteoir (teacher). It is great so see so many of our members embraced the Irish Langauge which we strive to promote within the club. Maith sibh buachallaí agus cailiní.

*While the club do not have the facilities to host Cúl Camps efficiently if any of our underage members wish to attend one of the camps in the locality please contact our coaching officer Gerard Lenaghan for details of what camps are being held and when. The club do have plans for hosting our own camp in the coming years ahead when current situation is improved upon.

*Training for U16's every Tuesday at 7 pm and Sunday at 12.30 pm.

*The next Down GAA Mourne Stars U-13 coaching session will be held this Saturday in Drumgath. All players are reminded that they must show commitment in attending regularly if they have aspirations of being recommended for the U-14 East Down Development squad trials next Spring.

*Lotto numbers for 10th July were 5, 11, 18, 28. No winners. Numbers for 17th July were 1, 7, 11, 28. Anthea Willoughby matched three numbers. Jackpot £2,000.
