Senior Men

Our senior men travelled to Derrynoose on Sunday hoping to avoid a third straight defeat but another below par performance saw them loose by six points, 3 - 12 to 1 - 12.

Greg McCabe opened the scoring with an early point before the home team hit 1 - 2 without reply to give them an early four point advantage. A point from Kristian Magill and two from Mark McCabe got the Shanes back to within one before Derrynoose scored another 1 - 2 on the trot to put them six points to the good. A Sean McLoughlin free was quickly followed by a Mark McCabe point before another McLoughlin free left the Shanes three points in arrears but a late Derrynoose point saw them lead by four at the break.

The Shanes made a great to the second-half when a high ball broke to Greg McCabe in front of the Derrynoose net and he made the most of the opportunity and side-footed the ball to the goal. A Mark McCabe point minutes later had the Shanes back on level terms before a Kristian Magill free edged the Shanes only for Derrynoose to equalise soon after with a 45. Two frees from Sean McLoughlin put the Shanes ahead again and they had a number of chances to increase their lead at this stage but failed to take them and Derynoose made them pay as they scored 1 -5 in a row to seal their win. The sides swapped points late on with Sean McLoughlin on target again for the Shanes but it was the home side who claimed a well-deserved win, 3 - 12 to 1 - 12.

Senior Ladies

It was a busy week for our senior ladies with two games in five days, at home to Armagh Harps on Monday night before travelling to Sarsfields on Friday.

The ladies produced an excellent display on Monday night to gain a great win over Armagh Harps.
The opening 20 minutes was very even before the Shanes hit three great goals to go into the break ten 10 in front. The Shanes remained in control during the second half to run out comfortable winners in the end. The highlight of the night was the second half introduction of club captain Louise Kenny, making her first appearance since suffering a cruciate injury over a year ago. Louise was warmly applauded onto the pitch and she slotted seamlessly in the full forward, chipping in with two goals.

Due to the short notice of Friday night's fixture prior work commitments saw an understrength senior ladies team made the long journey to Sarsfields. However, the young team that lined out in Derrytrasna put in a fantastic display of skill and determination, only to lose in the end to a couple of late Sarsfields points.

The senior ladies are scheduled to have two games this week also, at home to Grange on Monday night at 7.30pm and at home to Forkhill on Wednesday night at 7.00pm.

Best wishes go our senior ladies player Hayley Mackin who had a spell in hospital during the week and we all wish her a speedy recovery.

Minor Boys

Training for our minor boys continues on Monday evening at 6.30pm at the club.

U16 Girls

Training for U16 girls continues on Tuesday at 6.30pm in the field before a league game on Thursday, 26th May at home to Armagh Harps at 7.00pm.

U12½s

Our U12½ footballers travelled to Cullyhanna last Thursday night and took part in what was a great game. Both sides played some brilliant football throughout and unfortunately for the Shanes it was Cullyhanna who claimed the win by a single point. Best wishes to Jamie Beattie who suffered an injury during the game.

On Saturday the U12½s travelled to An Ríocht to take part in their annual blitz, a competition which saw them win the shield last year. The young Shanes found themselves in a group along with St John's, Ballyboden, Donaghmore and Davitt's . At the completion of the group stages the Shanes had qualified for the shield competition which saw them take on St Brigid's in round one before taking on Moneyglass on the quarter-final. Victory over Moneyglass put the Shanes through to the semi-final and a game against Longstone where they once again played some great football to get through to the final. St Peter's were the opponents in the final and the Shanes saved their best performance of the day to last. The lads were determined to retain the shield they won last year; they fought for every ball throughout the game and their hard work paid off as they won the game by a few scores and once again win the shield title. Well done to all the lads and their management team on a tremendous achievement.

Training continues on Tuesday night in preparation for a blitz in Hilltown next Saturday

U10s

Our U10s played Carrickcruppen last Wednesday night and it was great to see both sets of players playing some great football. Before the game local business men Garreth O'Shea (Gortrush Foods) and Nathan O'Shea (Sperrin Fine Foods) presented both U10 teams with new strips and Shane O'Neill's would like to thank both men for their continued support. Training for the U10s now takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 6.00pm at the club.

The camogie club is organising a car boot sale on 12th June from 11.00am - 3.00pm in Shane O'Neill's club grounds.

Irish Night

The club held a great Irish night on Saturday in commemoration of Raymond McCreesh's 35th anniversary. The brilliant Village Folk entertained the crowd and the club would like to thank Paul Quinn (The Yellow Heifer) and Lukie Phelan for donating prizes for the raffle on the night.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Aoibheann Jones, Blaithin Mackin and Ciara Jones who were all part of the Armagh Minor Ladies team which defeated Tyrone last Sunday in the Ulster Final. Congratulations also to all our younger members from St Joseph's primary school who made their Holy Communion at the week-end. We hope you all had a great day.

Happy Birthday

Everyone at the club would like to wish Frank McCabe a very happy 80th birthday. Frank has been the club bus driver for many years and has travelled all over the country with various teams and has been a great friend of the club.
