Aughlisnafin GAC club notes

May 23, 2016

*The U14's had two games last week winning one and losing the other. Last Monday they were away to Dromara and put in a superb performance with nine 'Fin players getting on the scoresheet. Rhys Clarke top scored with an impressive 2-8 while Conall King tallied 3-1 and Dermy Lavery bagged his eighth goal in three games with a two goal salvo. Conor Matthews (1-6) and Ethan Lyttle (2-0) were dominant in the midfield sector. Final score Dromara 6-10 Aughlisnafin 13-18. Last Thursday the 'Fin were away to Teconnaught. The shortened field meant a high scoring affair with Teconnaught winning 5-21 to 3-13. Aaran Flanagan, Dermy Lavery and Conor Donnelly with the goals. Aughlisnafin full back Conor Steen was forced out of the game after sustaining a very heavy challenge which required a trip to casualty where he was diagnosed with a broken collar bone. We hope Conor recovers well and is back in action before the end of the summer. The U14's were at home to Liatroim on Monday evening.

*The U12's put in a battling performance at home to Dundrum before losing out on a scoreline of 9-12 to 6-7. Marc Quinn top scored with four goals. Conor Walsh put in a player of the match performance scoring 1-2 in the process. The 'Fin's other scores came from C O'Hare (1-1), L King (0-2) & M Flanagan (0-2). Only Marc Quinn will move on from this squad next season and so this year will be a steep learning curve with better days ahead. There will be no U12's fixtures until Sunday 12th June.

*The Seniors were away to St Michael's last Friday evening and despite missing a few regulars they came away with their long awaited first win of the season. Performances had been improving of late and the win is just rewards for the effort in training. There will now be a five week break in the league programme. The Seniors will now take part in the Centenary Shield. They have been grouped with Aghaderg, Bright and St Michaels and each team will play each other over the next three weeks with the top two teams in the group making the final which will be played on Friday 24th June. The 'Fin are away to Bright this Friday at 7.30 pm for their first group game.

*The Year 4's were at the RGU Downpatrick tournament on Saturday. In their first game they were superb as they defeated Saul 2-3 to 0-1 with Conor O'Hare and Caolan Flanagan getting the goals. Next up was a close run game against the eventual cup winners Bryansford with the 'Ford winning 1-4 to 1-0, Ryan Quinn getting the Fin goal. St Galls edged the next game 0-3 to 0-2 and in the last game a very strong St Peter's Lurgan won easily as the 'Fin put out an experimental side to let players play in different positions. Finishing 5th in the group on score difference saw the 'Fin progress to the semi final of the Plate competition against Carryduff. The North Down club led 4 points to 1 by half time but the 'Fin came roaring back with Conor O'Hare and Caolan Flanagan getting the second half points to force extra time. Such was the 'Fin's luck they played the two minutes of extra time into the strong wind against a Carryduff side with an extra player due to a miscount on their part. With the game still deadlocked at the end of extra time a coin toss settled the outcome and it was Carryduff who reached the final where they defeated Tullylish to win the Plate. The kids were understandably gutted to exit their first competitive tournament having went so close and by the toss of a coin but they will re-group and go again at the Burren Tournament next month.

*The Ladies picked up another win in overcoming an experienced St.Michael's side on Saturday evening in Annsborough. The full back line once again put in an exceptional performance putting in blocks and tackles right through the game and not letting up until the final whistle. Our half back line set up attack after attack giving continued support to the midfield & forward line. Monica Steele got her first score for the Fin ladies after making a surging run from the half back line to slot over. Laura Lambe & Carrisa Hall dominated the midfield sector setting with tremendous work rate from start to finish. The movement of our half forward line to create space for the inside forwards and the support given to our defence was exceptional with Philippa Moore putting in a player of the match performance on her club debut. Tierna Clarke & Ellie Zych also showed great movement to get out in front of their opponents continuously and setting up the runners coming through for scores. Final score Aughlisnafin 3-5 St Michael's 3-1. Keep up the good work ladies.

*The club had nine players from their U16 squad at the county U14, U15 & U16 development squad trials on Saturday split between Ballykinlar, Downpatrick & Newry. Best of luck to all participants.

*Well done to our senior players Rory Murphy, Sean Willoughby, Patrick Flanagan and Ciaran Rice on completing the Kilcoo GAC Mourne Challenge in under four hours.

*This weeks lotto numbers were 2, 6, 15, 23. No winners. Jackpot £2,000.

*The committee and members of Aughlisnafin GAC deeply regret the death of Monica McKibben.
