St Johns Club notes

May 16, 2016

Our u12s hosted a strong Leitrim team on Sunday. We were missing a few key player's  but the other boys and girls filled their places such is the strength and depth of our panel. Two early goals were conceded  in the first  half and the Johnnies replied with 2 points
Half time score was 2:06 to 0:2 and the Leitrim side were proving to be that bit stronger.
A  couple of key  changes in the second half and the team started to push forward and win sloose ball around the middle
We we had a number of blocked efforts on goal and  shots  put wide  but the johnnies never gave up and fought until the final whistle. The boys and girls were dissapointed  with this defeat  but  they gave everything and should be proud  their effort  and we will be looking forward to their next game.

Our 16s played their hardest match of the season so far on 6/5/16 against the league toppers Bright. They may have taken the points from this match but the team play from our lads was great in this  very competitive game. From the throw in, Caolan and Rory were great in midfield winning a lot of kickouts and supplying Oran Damien and Rory up front. The game was end to end and was a great spectacle to watch. The running that Caolan and Andrew done the whole of the game was so unselfish as they all played as a team. Ryan pulled of three superb saves in the second half, so you better look out Darren the younger brother will be pushing for your place.
The lads played Ardglass on 12/5/16 at  Ardglass. This was the second round of the league and we just got past the post in the first game. The team set out with Shay in goals, Keiran, Rory, Teirnan and Damien in backs, with Barry and Caolan in the middle of the park. This was a very strong defensive line and Ardglass found almost imposable to get through. Ardglass only got 3 scores in the first half. The forward line up really done their part when our defence broke down their attacks and supplied the forwards. Caolan, Andrew, Oran, Ryan and Rory took some great scores from play. Caolans free kicks were all top drawer. Andrews running of the ball and on the ball set him up for the four goals that he scored, as well as setting up the other forwards for their scores. Not to be outdone Teirnan won a high ball in the half back line carried it 30 meters although the manager was shouting for him to pass it to the forward line he went on and took a majestic point in full flight. This was a very strong win for the 16s. Well done guys.
There is no matches for a couple of weeks, but 14s and 16s will train on a Sunday morning from 12 to 1.15. There will be no pressure put on the players to come, as their school work and study time is very important. If the lads want a break from study no better way than on the field. Good luck on your exams.

St John's Ladies Vs Carryduff 'B'

With things getting bunched at the top of the Ladies Junior league the Johnnies knew that a win against a good Carryduff team was required to keep the pressure on the teams around us. St Johns started in determined fashion and straight from the throw in they moved the ball and speed resulting in a fine score in the first few seconds. This set the tone for the half with St Johns tagging on scores at nearly every attack. Carryduff however were finding space  behind the St Johns full back line and exploited this with 2 quick goals. St Johns replied with a goal of there own to lead at half time 1-13 to 2-2
This Carryduff team weren't going to make things easy for St Johns and battled hard at the start of the second half getting another few goals, and it could've been worse for the Johnnies but for a terrific penalty save from Elaine. As the half went on the Girls limited Carryduff to the odd score and pressed hard scoring 2 goals and an array of fantastic points  to finish the match on the score line of St Johns 3-18 Carryduff 'B' 4-6
A good result for the ladies to keep there push in the league going. They have a bye next Saturday and will return to action on Thursday 26th May with a home game against Ballykinlar. Training as usual Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 sharp.

The walking group headed for the seaside on Saturday (14th May) with a dander at Killard Point. Numbers were low because of a clash with communion but the few enjoyed a lovely walk amongst literally thousands of wildflowers, fantastic clear views of Strangford Lough, the Irish Sea, Guns Island and the Mournes accompanied by birdsong at every step.
Our next outings are to the Mournes (Pierce's Castle or Loughshannagh - we will decide on the morning) on Saturday 28th May and Ballyhornan Coastal Path on Saturday 11th June. We will be leaving the club at 9.30am if you wish to join us. New members welcome. For further details contact Kevin McGlynn on 078 3596 0804 or [email protected].

St John's Drumnaquoile Healthy Club Launch
St John's Drumnaquoile GAC is celebrating their involvement in the award winning GAA Healthy Clubs project.
St John's is one of just 60 clubs nationwide participating in Phase 2 and the Club Executive and Healthy Clubs project team would like to invite all members of the community to help celebrate this achievement through our local launch.
We want to ensure that everyone who engages with our club benefits from the experience in a health-enhancing way - be they members, players, supporters' or members of our community. The Healthy Clubs project will help us achieve this aim.
With your help we would like to identify priority health issues in the club and community that the club can support. If you have an interest in health and wellbeing and want to get involved in some of our projects please contact Kevin McGlynn on 078 3596 0804 or [email protected].
The Healthy Clubs Project aims to support clubs in building healthy practises into their everyday activities while also responding to the health and wellbeing needs of their members and their communities. The project involves an innovative partnership with the GAA's Community & Health section, the HSE, the National Office for Suicide Prevention and is supported by Healthy Ireland, Sport Ireland, and the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland. Irish Life has delivered a three year CSR investment to help Phase 2 achieve its full potential in supporting the health of the nation in a very proactive way.
Clubs who participated in Phase 1 of the project [St John's were one of those first 18]  benefitted greatly from the experience, with evidence of increased memberships, a broadening of the volunteer base, improvements in health promoting activities, greater recognition for the clubs in their communities, and access to some new funding and sponsorship avenues. Areas of work included physical activity, emotional wellbeing, health screening, anti-bullying, diet and nutrition, inclusion, drug and alcohol awareness, life skill and personal development, anti- smoking, facilities development, and engagement with older community members.
St John's are thrilled that our efforts to provide our members with opportunities to develop their physical social, emotional, and psychological health has been acknowledged and we intend to make the club a "healthier place for everyone to enjoy".
For further information on St John's Healthy Club project please contact the Healthy Club Project Leader on 078 3596 0804 or [email protected].
