U21 Football An Riocht 2-11 Downpatrick 2-10
The U21 Footballers edged a close contest with Downpatrick under the lights at Dunavil on a cold and blustery November night.
An Riocht got off to a brilliant start with two early Declan Doyle goals after perfect passing by Darragh Campbell and Ronan McAlinden put the big target man in but thereafter they were inclined to take too much out of the ball.
Once the visitors settled they pulled back a couple of well taken frees before turning over a hesitant home attack and finishing off a length of the field move with a goal.
A second Downpatrick goal stirred An Riocht into a storming end to the half with five unanswered points, the pick from John Paul Farrell.
Leading 2-10 to 2-5 at the break, An Riocht were reduced to fourteen men five minutes into the restart and struggled to clear their lines with much of the remaining time played out in our half of the field.
JP Farrell pointed our only second half score in the forty fifth minute but a solid rear guard performance limited Downpatrick to a pointed free in the final quarter as An Riocht held on for a spirited if unconvincing win.
Ronan McAlinden was outstanding around the middle of the field with good support from Declan Doyle and John O'Rourke.
Team: S Doran, M Rooney, B Rodgers, S Cunningham, D Campbell, J O'Rourke, L Rodgers, K Colgan, R McAlinden 0-4, D Morgan 0-1, D Doyle 2-3, JP Farrell 0-2, A White 0-1, M O'Rourke, N McComiskey. Subs: C Campbell, D Matthews, J Rafferty.

In the second U21 Football match in three days Rostrevor were too strong for An Riocht.
