Coulter coy on Down return

Benny Coulter is keeping Down supporters guessing about a possible return to the inter-county scene.

The Mayobridge clubman announced his retirement this time last year, but there is speculation that he and Dan Gordon could be coaxed back into the fold by new manager Eamonn Burns next season.

However, writing in his Newry Democrat column this week, Coulter was giving little away:  "A lot of people have said to me about coming back to play for Down. Whether that would be a wise move or not I don't know, I am 34-years-old next year.

"Am I good enough to play for Down? I don't know. And if any person is not good enough to play for Down then he shouldn't be there no matter who you are and I include myself in that. That's the bottom line.

"There is no doubt that the things I missed last year was playing at Pairc Esler on a Saturday night, but I certainly wouldn't go back if I didn't feel I was good enough or I didn't think I was wanted."

He continued: "I don't think I should be picked due who I am and what I have done for Down over the past 10 years. So unless I am good enough and playing well for the club, then I might consider it.

"I thought I had a good season this year with Mayobridge and there is no doubt about if I put my mind to it I could do a job and I am mentally strong, but I also am quite hectic with work and I'll have to consider that.

"Look at Alan Brogan this year, he didn't commit to the squad last year until March and he came on during the All-Ireland final and scored the point that put Dublin four ahead. I am not saying that is the way to go, but it is a possibility for certain players."
