Carryduff claim East Down Under-14 Division III Championship
A young Carryduff U-14B squad delivered a stunning performance in St Johns on Saturday to win the U-14 division 3 championship in a tight and entertaining game.  With 12 of the 15 players in the squad aged 12 or younger, the boys were playing against an older and physically stronger Dromara team but showed great skill, tenacity and workrate to win by a single point.
Playing with the advantage of a strong breeze, Carryduff got off to the worst possible start when Dromara wing half forward Paul Flynn scored two goals within the first five minutes. However, Carryduff hit back quickly with a point from Niall Tunney which started a purple match in which full forward Joseph Tolan bagged 3 goals in quick succession. Dromara replied with a further goal from midfielder Ryan McArdle and a couple of points but Carryduff hit back quickly with further scores from Niall Tunney (1-2), Joseph Tolan (1-1) and a point each from Liam Irvine and marauding half- back Lorcan Guinness. Dromara pressed hard towards the end of the half but intense pressure from the Carryduff defensive unit of Leo McMahon, Eoin McGleenon, Conall Watson, Lorcan Guiness and sweeper Conor McGrath resulting in them kicking several wides. At half time Carryduff led by 5-6 to 3-5.
Playing into a strong breeze in the second half, Carryduff came under intense early pressure which resulted in an early goal and 2 points from Dromara, cutting the lead to only 2 points.  However, inspired by the workrate of midfield duo Dominic Tinnelly and Finn Rodgers, Carryduff pushed forward and with half-time substitutes Conor Donaldson and Niall Lynam winning key possession in the forward line the boys added a further two points from Niall Tunney. Dromara replied with a further three points to reduce the margin to a single point but a further free from Niall Tunney had carryduff ahead by 2 points going into the last 5 minutes. Dromara tagged on a further point and pressed hard for a winning goal but were thwarted by several brilliant saves by goalkeeper Joe Beattie and some excellent last ditch defending by the defence including an earth-shattering shoulder by Dominic Tinnelly which stopped the final attack of the match by Dromara. A thrilling encounter finished with a narrow but well-deserved one point victory for Carryduff on a score of Carryduff 5-9 Dromara 4-11.
The Carryduff squad was: Joseph Beattie, Leo McMahon, Eoin McGleenon, Lorcan Guinness (0-1), Conall Watson, Finn Rodgers, Dominic Tinnelly, Niall Tunney (1-6, [0-4f]), Liam Irvine (0-1), Joseph Tolan (4-1), Conor McGrath, Niall Lynam, Fionn Lyons, Ben Malone, Conor Donaldson.
