James McCartan has rubbished rumours that he could be set to resume his role as Down football manager.

McCartan, who stepped down as Mourne County boss last year after five seasons - he led them to the brink of an All-Ireland title in 2010 - has been linked with a return to the job following Jim McCorry's departure, but says it's time for someone else to take up the reins.

"I'm yesterday's man," he told the Irish News.

"I've done my penance and I'm going straight to heaven! Five years with Down means that I've ticked a whole lot of boxes and it's someone else's turn. Nobody was ever going to ask me and it was never going to be an option."

The 1991 and '94 All-Ireland winning corner forward also dismissed reports linking him with a role in Kieran McGeeney's Armagh management team.

"It's all news to me," he said.
