Aughlisnafin club notes

August 31, 2015

*The Seniors got back to winning ways in the league, albeit a facile result, against St Michael's in Annsborough. The heavy downpour before the game made for tricky conditions for both teams. The 'Fin gave debuts to Anthony Robb at midfield and Joe McAuley at centre half forward and it was Robb who was instrumental in the first score winning the throw in which broke to Donagh Steele who launched the football in for Breannain McComiskey to fire home to the net. In the very next passage of play Robb fielded the St Michaels kick out to drive forward and holding off his opponent to slot over. St Michaels replied with a point from play before McComiskey went on to take three more points including an outrageous left footed effort from thirty yards out near the sideline. Donagh Steele also splitting the uprights before Sean Willoughby lashed home the second major for the Fin. Ten points up the Fin switched off momentarily which let the visitors in for a goal and they followed up with a point from a free kick but that was to be there last register on the scorecard for the half as the 'Fin hit five unanswered points. Willoughby getting two of them and Ciaran Rice, Steele and McComiskey also on target. Half time score Aughlisnafin 2-10 St Michaels 1-02

St Michaels grabbed their first score of the second half with a fortunate penalty award after a sliding tackle by their full forward went unsanctioned. The 'Fin players took umbrage with the award on the scoreboard with 1-09 tagged on over a fifteen minute spell. Rice grabbing a major from 30 yards out & two minors with McComiskey adding three more and a point apiece from Rory Murphy, Sean Fitzsimmons and substitute Ben Willoughby on for debutant Joe McAuley at the interval. St Michaels continued to create opportunities but only taking two more points as the 'Fin pressed home their dominance with Steele, Willoughby and James Brannigan taking great scores. Substitutes Naoise Davey & Noel Travers both coming on to make telling contributions with Paul McGuigan making a late cameo appearance. Rice slotted over a fourth, his third from a free with McComiskey topping a virtuso display with the last point of the game to collect 1-08 over the hour. An impressive 3-21 coming from play with nine different players contributing. The back six of Boden, Brannigan, Pat Flanagan, Murphy, Doran and McClean in uncompromising mood with Robb & Steele bossing the midfield sector. Sean Willoughby putting in a very intelligent shift at half forward with 1-04 and Rice also grabbing 1-04 with several assists. Next up the Fin are at home to the unbeaten division 3 champions Glasdrumman. Final score Aughlisnafin 3-24 St Michaels 2-4
