St Johns club notes

August 31, 2015

Downpatrick defeated our Ladies side at Clonduff on Saturday to win the Junior Football Championship final on a score line of St Johns 2-3 Downpatrick 4-14. Congratulations to Downpatrick. Credit to the St Johns side and their management team for their achievement this year in their first year since reforming the Ladies side.

The Seniors travelled to Ballykinlar on Friday evening to take on neighbours Dromara by lost on a 0-16 to 2-11 scoreline. They now have to regroup for their Intermediate Football Championship against the losers of the Bosco and Atticall tie who played on Monday night. This qualifier is scheduled to be played on Saturday 5 September at 2.30pm in Clonduff.

The Reserves beat Dromara 3-10 to 1-10 last Wednesday evening in the semi-final of the EDRFL Shield.

Last Tuesday evening the Minors secured a 8-14 to 7-7 win in Dundrum. They put in an impressive first half performance in the lashing rain on Tuesday evening to win this local championship match. The first half performance was the best the team played all year. They were too fast, strong and smart for the Dundrum men. St Johns men played one touch football in a one way first half ending in some great scores. Goals came from from Paul Walsh (2), Eoin Moag, Michael McCourt and Aodhan Morgan (2). The half time score was St Johns 6-11 Dundrum 1-3.

St Johns made changes at half time but in second half the Johnnies went to sleep for a while as Dundrum got a few scores but with a few more points from McCourt and Moag, the St Johns men ran out deserved winners in the end. Super performance from all over the field throughout the first half earned the Johnnies the deserved victory. On Tuesday 1 September the Minors were away to Dromara. Score details in next weeks notes.

The Under 16s game at home to Ardglass last week was not played. This Thursday evening they are at home to Carryduff.

The Under 14s had an impressive 4-17 to 4-9 win at home to Castlewellan last Wednesday evening.

Our Under 10s travelled to the Ballykinlar tournament on Saturday. We had 14 willing players to play in the tournament. Our first match was with Shamrocks and they caught us cold and had a deserved win over us. With two matches left in the group we pushed on, the Jaffa Cakes and snacks kicked in and we came out second in the group. This put St Johns into the Shield competition. The draw was made and  Drumaness got a bye into the final and we had to play Shamrocks again in the semi-final. This was a very close encounter with St Johns winning by three points.

The final was then was St Johns against Drumaness. We made a few changes of positions which didn't go down so well with some of the players, but when the scores started to come for us they settled into their new roles. We went on to win the final of the shield. The players were over the moon, and as a manager you see why you, and all the other brilliant coaches at all clubs and at all levels are so happy to put their time and dedication into juvenile football.

Winning isn't everything but when your team do it means a whole lot. The team had a captain and a vice captain for every match, this to me brings with it a slight bit of responsibility which our Under 10s strive on. The winning team of the Sean McCashin Shield was Adam, Sam, Shauna, Dara, Donal, Clarie, Aaron, Conor, Owen, Patrick, Kity F, Kity Mac, Aiden and Oran. Well done to the Under 10s. We have two more blitzes left to the end of the year as well as our skills competition which is ongoing. A big thanks has to go to Ballykinlar for a well run tournament and their hospitality on the day. Training on Tuesday nights from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for the Under 10s. I would like to thank the support and help given to the Under 10s this year from helping with training to providing snacks and encouragement to this young team.
