U12 Girls

It was heartbreak for our young U12 girls in the Division 2 Championship final on Sunday, losing out by six points to Killeavy 5 - 8 to 2 - 11. The game itself was played in atrocious weather conditions and it was a credit to both sets of players for serving up a highly entertaining affair. The Shanes were ahead by a single point at the break, 2 - 5 to 2 - 4, with scores coming from A McVerry (1 - 1), R McCabe (1 - 0), S McDonnell (0 - 2), S Reavey (0 - 1) and C Grant (0 - 1). Killeavy coped with the conditions better in the second-half and scored a further 3 - 4 whilst the Shanes managed a further 0 - 6 with S McDonnell (0 - 5) and A McVerry (0 - 1) on target. Despite the loss the young Shanes girls can take great heart not only from the way they played on Sunday but from how they have played right throughout the year and they, along with their dedicated management team, deserve great credit for all their hard work and commitment.

Senior Men

Our senior men rounded off their season in great style on Thursday evening with a comprehensive home win over Whitecross on a score-line of 6 - 10 to 0 - 8, with David McCabe notching up a personal total of 5 - 2.

Whitecross got the opening point of the game before McCabe got his first goal with a well taken penalty and he followed this up shortly after with a point. Whitecross replied with a pointed free which was quickly cancelled out by another McCabe point before the Shanes were awarded a second penalty which McCabe again coolly converted. The home side led by six at this stage and they increased their advantage to nine with points from Sean McLoughlin (2) and James Girvan with Whitecross responding with their third point of the half.  The Shanes finished the half the more dominant side, with David McCabe netting his third goal and Sean McLoughlin firing over his third point of the half to see their team lead by twelve at the break, 3- 6 to 0 - 3.

Whitecross got an early second-half point but McCabe was on target again minutes later to score his fourth goal of the game. Three further points from Whitecross left them eleven in arrears before that man McCabe pounced again to notch his fifth goal of the game and the Shanes continued to play the better football with points from Ryan McCabe, Micheál Brady and Sean McLoughlin (3). Whitecross got the last point of the game but it was the Shanes who ran out comfortable and fully deserved winners.
