Aughlisnafin club notes

July 13, 2015

*Aughlisnafin U14's pushed St John's to the pin of their collar last Monday evening in very wet conditions for football. The hosts were unable to field the regulation 13 aside and so the game was played by mutual consent at 11 aside on a shortened pitch. The game ebbed and flowed throughout the first half with the lead changing hands several times. The half time score was St John's 7-07 Aughlisnafin 7-01. The second half continued in similar fashion as the first. St John's getting the benefit of a penalty award to help them outscore the 'Fin 3-06 to 3-04 to edge the second half and win the game outright. Final score St John's 10-13 Aughlisnafin 10-5. Aughlisnafin : A Flanagan, A Lenaghan, B Ogle, P O'Hare, C Matthews (1-0), M Croskery (0-1, 1F), C Murphy (2-0), S Croskery (1-4), R King (3-0, 1-0F), C King, R Clarke (1-1) Subs: O O'Neill (1-0), M Flanagan, C Steen, J McCabe. Next up is a home game against Drumaness on Monday 27th July.

*With it being August next month the Championship is just around the corner. The seniors will play Mitchels in Annsborough on Sunday 9th August. The Ladies are away to St Michaels on Saturday 1st August.

*The U14's are in Group B of the East Down U14-B (13 Aside) Championship along with parish neighbours Castlewellan, St John's and current Division 3 leaders Darragh Cross. It is the proverbial "group of death" with only the club that wins the group making the final. Games to be played in a round robin format with dates to be confimed.

*The U16's have been drawn in Group B of the East Down U16-B (11 Aside) Championship along with Ardglass & St John's. Round robin format with the winner of the Group making the final. Dates to be confirmed. Before then the U16's have a league game at home to Dromara next Thursday 23rd July.

*The U12's have no game until Sunday 26th July which will be away to Dundrum.

*With the footballing activities on the pitch taking a well earned break for the holiday period many of our underage members have kept active by attending the Michaela Foundation and the Campa Chormaic summer camps held in the past fortnight at St Malachy's High School. Feedback from the kids have been very complimentary and well done to all involved in the running of them. Aughlisnafin GAC had fifteen kids in attendance at Campa Chormaic, where coaching was done through the medium of Irish, along with two members of our senior ladies team, Orla Flanagan as múinteoir (teacher) and Cliona McComiskey as ceannaire (leader). Peter O'Hare (U12) and Morgan Croskery (U14) both received individual achievement awards while everyone else received Certificates of Participation. Maith sibh bhuachaillí agus chailiní.

*Congratulations to our club chairman Ben Willoughby and his wife Anthea on the recent arrival of their twin daughters. Best wishes on behalf of the club.

*Sincere condolences to the Murphy family circle on the recent passing of Maureen Murphy. She was an aunt & grand-aunt to several adult/underage members in the club. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam uasal. Mary Queen of the Gael pray for her.
