Shane O'Neills club notes

U10 Football Blitz

The club held a very successful U10 football blitz on Saturday with a total of seventeen teams being divided into four groups to compete for the cup, the shield and the plate trophies. The group stages were very closely fought as all the teams played some great football and following the completion of the groups the identity of the plate and shield semi-finalists were known as were the quarter-finalists in the cup competition. The standard of football on view from all sides was excellent which saw Maghery and Carrickcruppen through to the final of plate, Galbally and Mullaghbawn qualifying for the shield final, with Shane O'Neills, Killeavy, Burren and Derrynoose making their way through to the cup semi-finals. The first final of the day was between Maghery and Carrickcruppen in the plate and after a hard fought game it was the lough-shore side who ran out winners by a couple of scores and the final of the shield between Galbally and Mullagbawn also proved to be keenly contested with the Tyrone youngsters claiming the win. Burren were the winners in their cup semi-final against Derrynoose whilst Shane O'Neills and Killeavy went to extra-time before the Shanes ran out narrow winners. It was on then to the last game of the day, the cup final between Shane O'Neills and Burren and after another high quality match it was the Co Down lads who went on to claim the win.

The club would like to thank all the clubs who came along to the tournament and participated in a great sporting fashion and playing some great football throughout. The club would also like to thank all those who helped to organise the tournament and everyone who helped out on the day to make it a very successful event - referees, score-keepers, umpires, shop attendants, tea and sandwich makers, burger and hot-dog makers, Carrickcruppen for the loan of some nets and anyone else who helped out in any way. A big word of thanks also to Gortrush Foods who kindly sponsored the burgers.

Senior Ladies

Having beaten Forkhill in the Intermediate championship quarter-final our senior ladies will face Sarsfields in the semi-final this Wednesday night at 7.30pm in Lisummon and everyone is encouraged to travel to the game to give the girls some support. Training continues on Monday evening at 7.00pm at the club.

Minor Boys

Our minor boys recorded a good home win over Sarsfields last Monday evening. The Shanes trailed by two points at the break but they upped their performance in the second-half to claim the win by twelve points, 5 - 11 to 0 - 14. The minors are back in action this Monday evening away to Carrickcruppen and all players are asked to meet at the club at 6.30pm.

Minor Girls

Training for the minor girls continues on Monday evening at 7.00pm at the club.

U16 Boys

Our U16 boys recorded a three point win away to Pearse Ógs on Thursday evening, 5 - 7 to 3 - 10. The Shanes began in great style and found themselves 2 - 2 to no score in front after fifteen minutes but they only added a further point to their total before the break as their opponents knocked over six points. The opening period of the second-half was very similar to the first, with the Shanes scoring a further 3 - 3 to increase their advantage to a seemingly unassailable fifteen points but to their credit the Ógs fought back and scored 3 - 4 whilst restricting the Shanes to just another single point but the Shanes held on to claim the win.

U16 Girls

Training for the U16 girls continues on Monday evening at 7.00pm at the club.

U14 Girls

Our U14 girls put in their best performance of the year last Wednesday evening at home to league leaders Clan na Gael when they rallied from ten points down to draw the game. This was a tremendous battling performance from the girl and hopefully they can now push on from this. The home game fixed for Monday evening away to Armagh Harps has been called off but training continues every Wednesday evening at 6.30pm. It is vitally important that all the girls are there as they continue to prepare for their championship semi-final is on Wednesday 22nd July.

U6s

Training for the U6 age group continues on Wednesday evening at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre and all boys and girls at this age group are very welcome to attend.

Best Wishes

Best wishes to our underage footballer Jade Beattie who is recovering from a broken finger and will be out of action for a while.

Lotto

Last week's winning lotto numbers were 9, 15, 22 & 29. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x match three winner. The jackpot now stands at £1350.

Condolences

Everyone at the club would like to offer their sympathy to the family of Mrs Rita Brady who died recently. Mrs Brady was the mother of our club, committee and Cairde member Joe Brady and grandmother of our current senior team captain Micheál Brady and former players Damien and Anthony Brady. May she rest in peace.
