Aughlisnafin club notes

May 11, 2015

Aughlisnafin Seniors got back to winning ways after two recent reversals with a superb performance away to Newry side Mitchels. Despite controlling the first half the 'Fin were wasteful with possession in the final third taking only 6 points from 16 scoring opportunities. Mitchels had a great start scoring a goal with their very first attack after winning the throw in. The patched up 'Fin defence having no time to settle but to their credit they went on to only concede a solitary point which came from a placed ball. With a much improved attitude and more composure in the second half the 'Fin were in dominant mood winning match ups all over the field. Mitchels created more opportunities than they did in the first half but the Fin rearguard were in uncompromising mood. Mitchels only added a single score over the second half hour with the 'Fin grabbing 5-03 and saw an effort crash off the frame of the goal. Final score Mitchels 1-02 Aughlisnafin 5-09. Next game is at home to St Pauls who sit just below the 'Fin in fourth place in the table. A word of thanks to Mitchels GAC for the sandwiches laid on after the match, they were very much appreciated by both the players and management.

*The U16's were away to league leaders Darragh Cross who have scored 20 goals and 41 points in their first three games prior to this match. In the first half the signs were ominous as they took a 2-06 to 0-4 lead into the half time interval. The 'Fin had not been playing too badly but the hosts, who were physically bigger in match ups all over the field, were more clinical in front of goals. In the second half the 'Fin upped their game with 'Fin rearguard making Darragh work harder for their scores and pressing with greater intensity. The 'Fin outscoring the opposition 1-10 to 2-03 in the second half. Final score Darragh Cross 4-09 Aughlisnafin 1-14. Eoin Lundy 1-7 and Oran Flanagan 0-7 getting the 'Fin scores. Croskery, Matthews, Haynes, Quinn & Toner superb in defence. Next up away to Kilclief this Thursday at 7.15 pm.

*Aughlisnafin U12's made it four wins from four on Sunday morning after seeing off the challenge of Kilclief. It was a one sided first half with the 'Fin taking 1-10 to 0-2 lead into the interval. Kilclief made some changes at half time and added 0-6 to their tally over the second half. The 'Fin scoring 1-02 in response and took the opportunity to empty the bench with Kevin McComiskey making his first appearance of the season and he was unlucky to see two goal efforts hit the woodwork. Donnacha Murphy and Callum Lyttle both also joining the fray and did very well. Scorers for the 'Fin were C Donnelly 1-02, O O'Neill 1-00, N King 0-03, E Lyttle 0-2, R Clarke 0-01, C King 0-01 & A Quinn 0-01. Odhran Maguire kept a clean sheet in nets with Peter O'Hare, Marc Quinn, Rhys Clarke and Conall King dominant in defence especially in the first half. The forward quartet of Niamh King, Owen O'Neill, Anthony Quinn and Conor Walsh caused Kilclief many problems with their excellent link up play and they were well supported by the midfield duo of Ethan Lyttle and Conor Donnell. Final score Aughlisnafin 2-10 Kilclief 0-08. Next up is Dundrum at home.
