May 11, 2015

Club of the Year Recipients - Anita Brannigan (Secretary), Brendan Murray (Chairperson), Lorraine Bloomfield (Treasurer) at the Wellington Park Hotel Belfast.

NEWS CLUB OF THE YEAR 2015!
Clonduff GAA Club was selected as 2015 Large Club of the Year at a function in The Wellington Park Hotel Belfast on Friday 8th February 2015.
In introducing the awards, John Brolly of The Irish News singled out Clonduff's bold step of not 'streaming' children at U12 and below, focussing instead on commitment and attitude, as recommended in their 5-year plan. The club's own training manual was highlighted as was the Club Shop, the engagement of girls in Handball and the commitment of Clonduff to cement and maintain their status as 'The Hub of the Community',
Members of the Ulster GAA Council were involved in the adjudication process and were present at the event which was also attended by Ulster President Martin McAvinny and The Irish News Sports Writers, representatives from 'Volunteer Now', O'Neills Sportswear, 3FiveTwo Healthcare and the Wellington Park Hotel all of whom support the awards now in their 13th year. Clonduff was represented by Brendan Murray (Chairperson), Anita Brannigan (Secretary) and Lorraine Bloomfield (Treasurer). To round off a great day, Lorraine was the lucky winner of two tickets to any Ulster Championship game of her choice.

FOOTBALL
The Senior Footballers had two games at the weekend securing a draw on Friday night in Glenn and a big win in Banbridge on Sunday afternoon.
Div 1 ACFL Glenn 0-7 v Clonduff 0-7
The more experienced Clonduff supporters at John Martin Park on Friday night hadn't forgotten just how difficult it was to go to Glenn and come away with the league points without a battle. Friday night was no different from the heady days of the 80's and 90's and Glenn were coming into the game having secured maximum points from their first two outings.

The home side started more fluently and raced into a 3 point lead by the 15 min mark. The exchanges were physical throughout the game on a heavy pitch where the wind was difficult but not impossible. Both teams registered numerous wides in the first half with Clonduff the main culprits. Both teams were also guilty of conceding frees and it was from an Arthur Mc Conville free that Clonduff managed their first score after 23 minutes. Clonduff were creeping back into the game at this stage in terms of physicality and possession as Henry Brown at midfield was getting his hands on plenty of ball. A good point from play from Gary McDonald just before the break saw Clonduff trailing by 0-3 to 0-2.

Ten minutes into the second half Clonduff took the lead through another Arthur free and a point from play off the right foot of Barry O Hagan. Clonduff entered the final 7 minutes leading 0-7 to 0-5. However Glenn stuck to their game plan of composed possession football levelled the game. Clonduff had a chance from a free at a narrow angle in the dying seconds but couldn't convert and in the end a draw was a fair reflection on both teams' efforts.

Clonduff: Gary Haughian, John Brown, Shane O' Hagan, Ruairi Lively, Conor Óg O' Hagan, Aidan Carr, Packie O'Hagan, Mark McPolin, Henry Brown, Darren O'Hagan, Liam McGreevy, Stephen McConville, Barry O'Hagan, Arthur McConville, Gary McDonald; Subs used: Bernard, Paul Lively, Karl O'Hagan,

Div 1 ACFL Clann na Banna 0-4 v Clonduff 4-13
Clonduff made it 3 points out of 4 following the weekend football fixtures with this convincing win over the Banbridge side at Cottage Park. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Clonduff pinned the home side into their own half with Damian Canning and Henry Brown on top at midfield. Some good flowing moves resulted in Clonduff going in at half time leading 1-9 to 0-0 of which 1-7 came from play from 5 different scorers.

Playing against the wind in the second half there was no let up from Clonduff who following goals by Liam McGreevy and Barry O'Hagan led by 3-10 to 0-1 after 42 minutes. Banbridge did make some flurries into the Clonduff defence but never tested Gary Haughian in the Clonduff goals with several shots which had dropped short.

Clonduff kept the pressure on until the final whistle and ran out easy winners 4-13 to 0-4. Clonduff were sound in defence with good performances from Ruairi Lively and Aidan Carr while all the forwards, who were guilty of missed opportunities in previous games, were much more ruthless in front on goals.

Team: Gary Haughian, John Brown, Mark McPolin, Ruairi Lively, Conor Óg O'Hagan, Aidan Carr, Shane O'Hagan, Henry Brown, Damian Canning, Karl O'Hagan, Liam Mc Greevy, Stephen McConville, Packie O'Hagan, Arthur Mc Conville, Barry O'Hagan. The players worked hard throughout the game even though the result was never in doubt from an early stage. Further goals followed in the second half from Ryan McGreevy (2), Conor Murray and Shane McGarry. The next two games, away to Bryansford and home to Mayobridge will be a lot tougher.

KILCOO U10 TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to the U10 Clonduff team who began the season in great fashion by winning the Shield competition in Kilcoo. After the Group stages they had qualified for the Shield competition.

They came from four points down in the quarter final v Tullylish to win by two points. This set them up for a semi final v a very determined Dundrum side. However, after a closely contested first half, Clonduff strode into the final with a few well taken scores. Waiting in the final was Clann Eireann of Lurgan..... Down v. Armagh!!!!  Clann Eireann drew first blood but the score was even at half time and again at full time.  Extra time required!!! The Yellas went a point up in the first period of extra time and despite the best efforts of the Armagh boys, Clonduff's defence performed heroics by keeping them at bay. When the referee blew the final whistle, that one point was enough to secure a well deserved victory.

Congratulations again to all the players who took part :- Aidan, Brian, Connor G, Connor Q, Cormac, Daniel, Darragh, Evan, Fionn, Gerard, Harry, Jordan, Lee and Senán and thanks to mentors Paul and Andrew.
